Apple wins patent infringement appeal against University of Wisconsin

Back in 2014 University of Wisconsin's Alumni Research Foundation, or WARF has filed patent infringement lawsuit against Apple claiming that Apple's A series chipset on iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus smartphones infringed a 1998 patent for boosting the efficiency of integrated circuits. Apple was later ordered to pay damages of around $234 million. Apple subsequently filed an appeal and now has finally succeeded as the judgment is being reversed. Apple was originally ordered to pay a damage sum of $862M for infringement of the patent, however, the sum was later reduced to $234 millions after the judge ruled that Apple’s infringement was inadvertent rather than willful. That didn't last long as sum was subsequently doubled to $506M in 2017 as U.S. District Judge William Conley in Madison ordered to pay another $272 million on one basis that Apple continued to infringe the patent after the ruling. Apple later argued that it is invalid and even the damage calculations would have been wrong even in the event of a valid claim. Now according to reports, the court has ruled that there was no infringement. But it is not clear whether the court has ruled basing on the validity of the patent, or only on the infringement claim itself. Chief ...

Facebook security breach allowed hackers to control 50 million accounts

Facebook engineering team has clarified that it has discovered a security issue that affected almost 50 million accounts. It also mentioned that the investigation is still in its early stages but said that it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As” a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This said to have allowed the attackers to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook, so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app. Facebook confirmed that it has fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement. It also reset the access tokens of the almost 50 million accounts that were affected. The company is also taking steps to reset access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a “View As” look-up in the last year. This is why around 90 million users have to log in again into the Facebook. Once the user logs back in, he will be notified explaining what actually happened. Facebook also announced that it is ...

Acer self-driving concept car with Luxgen S3 electric vehicle platform unveiled

Acer in collaboration with Yulon Group has introduced its self-driving concept car at the Taiwan Automotive Technology Innovation Summit 2018. This self-driving concept car comes integrated with Acer’s autonomous driving system with the Luxgen S3 electric vehicle platform. Both companies demonstrated their level 4[i]-ready self-driving concept car, showcasing their shared vision of AI (artificial intelligence) and autonomous driving technology. The level 4-ready self-driving concept car is based on the Luxgen S3 electric vehicle platform, with Acer’s autonomous driving system encompassing sensing, decision-making and control. The Acer self-driving system leverages AI and sensor fusion algorithms fed with data from real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, cameras, Lidars, MMW radars, IMU (inertial measurement unit) and ultrasonic sensors. It uses deep learning technology for object recognition, and then implements dynamic vehicle control to implement the autonomous driving. Acer’s self-driving system makes dynamic vehicle control decisions through AI models based on key data including image recognition, 3D Lidar obstacle detection, high-precision maps and real-time positioning to steer the car, brake, cruise, maneuver, or park. It also has a cloud management system for car sharing services so that a control center can dispatch vehicles when users make transportation requests through their mobile device. The cloud management system can manage scheduling, monitoring, notification, ...

YouTube Miniplayer for the web now rolling out widely

Back in March this year, YouTube started testing a Miniplayer for desktop, however it disappeared after a few months. Today it has started rolling out the feature widely for the desktop users. Previously the miniplayer appeared when you  click anywhere on YouTube after  you start a video, now there is a new Miniplayer icon in the bottom-right corner. Once enabled, the Miniplayer stays even when you are navigating to other pages, similar to the PIP feature on Android. You can get to the normal mode when you click anywhere inside the player. In addition to play and pause, replay and seek options, you also get option to watch the next clip. There is also a close button in the top right corner of the player. You get both previous and next clip buttons on playlists, in addition to the long scrollable list of videos in the playlist below the player. There is no option to disable the feature. The new Miniplayer feature is rolling out gradually, so you should get it soon if it's not available.
