Xiaomi Mi LED Smart TV 4A 32, Mi LED TV 4C Pro 32 and Mi LED TV 4A PRO 49 get a price cut in India

Several Xiaomi products have seen price fluctuations in recent months. The company's Mi LED TV rates were hiked back in November due to depreciation of the rupee, however it recently reduced rates of its smartphone . Today, for the new year the company has reduced the rates of some of its TVs, including the Mi LED TV 4C Pro 32"  and Mi LED TV 4A Pro 49" that received a price hike couple of months back. Xiaomi Mi LED Smart TV 4A 32 - Rs. 12,499 (Rs. 1,500 price cut) Xiaomi  Mi LED TV 4C PRO 32 - Rs. 13,999 (Rs. 2,000 price cut) Mi LED TV 4A PRO 49 - Rs. 30,999 (Rs. 1,000 price cut) Reason behind the price cut on its 32-inch models is due to reduction of GST by the government on TVs up to 32 inches from 28% to 18%. Rs. 1000 price cut on Mi LED TV 4A PRO 49"  is due to recent dollar moderation, says the company. This is definitely a great move to attract more buyers for the new year and the festive season. These Mi LED TVs are available at new rates across all online and offline platforms starting from today. Commenting on the same, Raghu Reddy, Head of Categories and Online ...

These include well-known tools like  VLC Media Player, KeePass, 7-zip and Drupal, GNU C Library, Apache Tomcat, PuTTY and more. The bounties range from €25,000 to €90,000 ($28,600 to $102,900) and will start expiring August 15th, 2019; a few will last until 2020. It then extended the project by three more years in 2017, when it first planned to offer bug bounties as a measure to increase the security of Free and Open Source Software. While there is no guarantee for complete security from cyber attacks, but bounties always ensure patching vulnerabilities that might otherwise go undiscovered. Source

U.S. Judge dismisses lawsuit against Google over facial recognition software

A U.S Judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against Google by consumers who claimed the search engine’s photo sharing and storage service violated their privacy on Saturday. The U.S. judge has cited a lack of “concrete injuries.” The U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang in Chicago granted a Google motion for summary judgment, saying the court lacked “subject matter jurisdiction because plaintiffs have not suffered concrete injuries.” The suit was filed in March 2016, alleges Alphabet Inc’s Google for violating Illinois state law by collecting and storing biometric data from people’s photographs using facial recognition software without their permission through its Google Photos service. The plaintiffs had sought more than $5 million for the “hundreds of thousands” of state residents affected, according to court documents. Plaintiffs had asked the court for $5,000 for each intentional violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, or $1,000 for every negligent violation. Google, in return, had argued in court documents that the plaintiffs were not entitled to money or injunctive relief because they had suffered no harm. Source

Google reassures 2 years of guaranteed updates for Android One devices commitment

Google's Android One program debuted with an aim to offer low-end Android phone with commendable hardware and provide timely updates. However, things changed as the company let up the hardware requirements due to smartphone OEMs were not making enough from them. To some extent, Android Go was able to fill the void with its slimmed down version of Android.  The Android One program was still focusing on timely updates and Google's Android website explicitly mentions the phones would receive 2 full years of guaranteed updates. However, a few days ago, Reddit user anshumanpati6 noticed the removal of '2 years of updates' mention from the website. This is something huge as guaranteed updates was a big selling point for a lot of people. This made the headlines all-over within no time and according to India Today publication who claims to have received a response from Google, denies any changes are being made to the promise of updates. In any case, we’ll need to wait and see if Google officially responds to this issue or if they end up adding the part about the promised updates back to the Android One landing page. In the response, Google said: We confirm that our promise to provide 2 years of updates on Android One devices still ...

LG G8 said to debut at MWC 2019 separately from the new 5G phone

5G is on the verge of becoming a big thing in 2019 as several manufacturers including Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi are already working towards it. According to earlier rumors, Samsung and LG are going to debut their 5G smartphones at Mobile World Congress in February. However, a new report claims otherwise.  The upcoming LG’s 5G smartphone was initially believed to be the next iteration of the G series; the LG G8. But that might not be the case. According to the Korean electronic newspaper etnews, LG’s 5G smartphone will be a part of a completely different series. It will be introduced at the MWC in February, but will not carry LG G8 branding. The LG G8 will most likely launch later in March of 2019 and will only have 4G/LTE capabilities. Though not official, the new 5G variant will carry a new branding, according to the company's senior executive. This classification of phones gives LG a chance to focus on both the 4G and 5G markets. As the 5G variant might come with a huge price tag which might not carter every market, so keeping a 4G flagship ready is equally important. The company will also introduce the LG Q9 which is its mid-range phone that ...

Android Messages Spam Protection finally starts rolling out

After half a year in development, Spam protection in Android Messages is finally going live to some users, though not everyone seems to have it just yet. This means the change appears to be server-side and in a limited roll out for the time being. When the feature does hit your device, you should see a notification detailing you about the new Spam protection. A new "Spam protection" option in the Advanced section of the Settings menu will also appear allowing you to manually toggle the feature on or off. When the setting is enabled, some information about the messages you receive will be sent to Google, however, it will not read the message content like your phone number or the actual message itself. How the Spam protection works is undescribed, but presumably, it looks at that data statistically to determine commonalities between spam messages to detect them. If you send a spam report manually, it still submits the full message to Google, including phone numbers of both sender and recipient as well as the message's contents. For now, it remains to be seen how effective Google's solution may be against the increasing number of spam messages. Source

LG G7 ThinQ to get Android 9.0 Pie update in Q1 2019

LG has been beta testing the Android Pie for the G7 ThinQ for a while now before pushing out the stable version. The company has officially confirmed that the stable Pie update would roll out from Q1, 2019 and this applies for Korea.  LG software updates usually arrive in its home market; Korea first and then takes a couple of months to reach other markets. If you own a G7 and not from Korea, we guess you'll probably have to wait at least until Q2 of next year to get Android 9.0 Pie update. While companies like Samsung, OnePlus have already rolled out Android 9.0 updates to their phones, LG is still taking months to push out the update even to its flagships. The company hasn't announced any details regarding the Android 9.0 update to any of its mid-range phones and we're pretty sure, the company would not roll out the update anytime soon. Source | Via

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Android 9.0 Pie update said to roll out from January 15th; Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 series in February

Samsung has pushed the Android 9.0 Pie stable update to the Galaxy S9 and S9+ earlier this week. It also started the beta testing for the Galaxy Note 9 and has been pushing updates in regular intervals. Now, according to Samsung Turkey the final stable update for the Galaxy Note 9 is expected to roll out from January 15th.  The Samsung Turkey website which listed January 15th roll out for the Galaxy Note 9 is also listing the 15th day of the month for each device; January 15th for the Galaxy Note 9 and February 15th for the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Galaxy Note 8. Samsung Turkey also has a history of changing the dates on its update roadmaps. With Samsung being so quick with the Android Pie update for the Galaxy S9 in some markets, it’s totally possible the stable update for the Galaxy Note 9 might indeed start rolling out by mid-January. The January 15th date may just be for Turkey and a few other markets, though. For now, it remains to be seen when the worldwide release for both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 will happen, and we hope Samsung doesn't take much time. Source | Via

Samsung Galaxy A50 with Exynos 9610, Android 9.0 Pie, 4000mAh battery surfaces

Samsung with the Galaxy Note 9 has pushed the battery to a bigger capacity and it seems like the company might extend it to the mid-range as well in 2019. The Galaxy M20 is rumored to have a 5,000 mAh battery, and the upcoming A-series smartphone; the Galaxy A50 might come with a 4000mAh battery. This would make the A50's battery bigger than the Galaxy A9 (2018) which had 3800mAh and the Galaxy A8 Star’s (3,700 mAh), and also the Galaxy A8+ (2018), which has a 3,500 mAh battery. The 4000mAh battery should offer impressive battery backup, especially with Android Pie’s battery improvements. The Galaxy A50 will run Pie out of the box. However, the Galaxy A50 won't make its debut before the Galaxy S10. The Galaxy A50 will also come with a 24MP primary rear camera, which is the same as many A-series devices launched this year. The phone will come with 4GB RAM and 64/ 128GB storage variants. It will be powered by the Exynos 9610. There's also the possibility the phone might come with an Infinity-O or Infinity-V display. Until we hear from the company, nothing is confirmed, so, stay tuned. Source

Essential Phone officially discontinued as company shifts focus to future products

The Essential phone might not have seen the success it needed but the phone was well worth for the price after the price cuts. The phone despite the poor sales was always available for those who were interested, however, it went out of stock earlier today and the company now has confirmed that the Essential Phone won’t be restocked as the company shifts its focus to future products. The Essential Phone had gone out of stock at most retail locations including Essential’s own website. Many recent fire sales indicated that it was to clear out existing inventory. Now, the company has confirmed that it won’t be restocking the PH-1 after selling out over the holiday season. This more or less confirms that the Essential Phone is now effectively discontinued and it shouldn’t come as much of a shock. The device was introduced in 2017 and since then there has been no clear path forward for its direct successor. The company, however, says that it is working on its next mobile product. Presumably, pointing at the AI phone that we’ve heard some time ago. Adding some fuel to that fire too is the company’s recent acquisition of CloudMagic. For those currently using an Essential Phone, the company assured ...

Sony to boost 3D camera sensor production after increased interest from Apple: Report

Sony is said to be boosting the production of its next-generation 3D sensors after receiving interest from customers including Apple Inc. The chips will power front and rear-facing 3D cameras for various smartphone models in 2019. Sony kick-started the mass production in late summer to meet demand, according to Satoshi Yoshihara, head of Sony’s sensor division. Satoshi, however, has declined to provide sales or production targets but said the 3D business is already operating profitably and will make an impact on earnings from the fiscal year starting in April. The company has started providing software toolkits to third-party developers, so they can experiment with the chips and create apps that generate models of faces for communication or virtual objects for online shopping. Satoshi Yoshihara, who has worked for more than a decade on wider industry adoption of cameras in smartphones in a statement said: “Cameras revolutionized phones and based on what I’ve seen, I have the same expectation for 3D. The pace will vary by field, but we’re definitely going to see the adoption of 3D. I’m certain of it." Huawei Technologies Co. is employing Sony’s 3D cameras in next-generation models, according to sources. Yoshihara said that Sony’s technology differs from the ‘structured light’ approach of ...

Google Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL with Snapdragon 670, 3.5mm audio jack said to launch on Verizon in 2019

According to sources, Google said to be planning on launching two Pixel smartphones; dubbed Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL on Verizon in early spring 2019. An exact announcement date and pricing are not yet known. We have already started hearing rumors and leaks about both the smartphones adding more weight to the possible launch. The Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL will be the first smartphones from Google in the mid-range segment since the Nexus 5X. While we don't know much about them for certain, leaks so far have suggested a Snapdragon 670 or 710 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, headphone jack, and 12MP rear and 8MP front cameras. The regular Pixel 3 Lite will have a 5.5" screen, while the larger XL will have a 6" display. The phones might get the same camera optics as the original Pixel 3 series, but with inferior performance, and far more limited storage. The Pixel 3 Lite is codenamed “Sargo” and we have heard rumors of the same back in October in the ARCore code. Externally, the Pixel 3 Lite looks very similar to the regular Pixel 3 with regular 18:9 aspect ratio and tall display. The fingerprint sensor is present on the rear along ...

Foxconn said to begin assembly of premium iPhones in Tamil Nadu, India in 2019

According to reports, Apple is said to begin assembling its top-end iPhones in India through the local unit of Foxconn as early as 2019. This will also be the first time the Taiwanese contract manufacturer will make the iPhones in the country.  Most importantly, Foxconn will be assembling the high-end models in the X-series, potentially taking Apple’s business in India to a new level. The work will take place at Foxconn’s plant in Sriperumbudur town in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, said the report. Foxconn, which already makes phones for Xiaomi in India, will invest 25 billion Indian rupees to expand the plant. This will include the investment in iPhone production, Tamil Nadu’s Industries Minister M C Sampath told Reuters. The investment may create as many as 25,000 jobs. This move will also help both Foxconn and Apple to limit the impact of a trade war between the United States and China. Until now, Apple has only assembled the lower-cost SE and 6S models in India through Wistron Corp’s local unit in the Bengaluru technology hub. Apple launched the iPhone X last year but has cut production of that phone, since it began selling the newer versions; the iPhone XS and XR, globally this year. ...

Instagram accidentally rolled out horizontal feed widely and reverts back; company says it was a bug

Instagram seems to be quietly testing the horizontal feed for some users which is a huge shift from vertically scrolling user experience. It accidentally wide-spread the rollout of the horizontal feed and reverted back to the original layout owing to the increasingly negative comments from users.  Sorry about that, this was supposed to be a very small test but we went broader than we anticipated. 😬 — Adam Mosseri (@mosseri) December 27, 2018 Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today. We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion. — Instagram (@instagram) December 27, 2018 The company previously tested the feature back in October in the Explore section of the app. The new feed layout basically turns all posts into a horizontal arrangement where you scroll through right/left much like the Instagram story to advance. There is a scrolling bar at the top to show you how far you’ve progressed. Thanks to the horizontal feed, each post is given the spotlight at any given time. The comments appear with a flick upward. The downside to the new layout is that you can only advance a single post at a time. The new layout makes it easier to access ...

LaCie Secure Rugged 2TB Hard Drive Review

Amongst consumer electronics, very few brands have managed to create an iconic brand identity towards a design language. Apple comes to mind with their iPhones and iPods before that. LaCie is another such brand whose orange rubber sheathed hard drives are the de facto choice for content creators around the world. With a promise of exceptional resilience to the elements, they are the perfect choice for photographers, filmmakers and others who live out of their suitcase and need something to keep up with their lifestyle. We've got the LaCie Rugged Secure hard drive with us for review and we've been putting it through its paces. Here's what we think about it. The design of LaCie's rugged portable line hasn't changed much in years and that's just as well since it is quite an iconic design. Additionally, it is surprisingly rugged. A thick rubberized frame encases the drive from any and all corners where it could get damaged. It also covers the drive enough from the top and bottom to ensure it doesn't get hit directly when falling flat. The design by Neil Poulton is hence both functional and a style statement of sorts. Under the sleeve is a standard metal encased ...

Apple iPad Mini 5 case hints at vertical camera cutout, 3.5mm headphone jack and more

Apple is reportedly working on 5th-gen iPad mini and entry-level 10-inch iPad for 2019. The manufacturing is already underway this month. Before the official launch, we are getting to see the first iPad mini 5 case that shows off a couple of interesting details. There are few notable changes if the leaked case ends up being a legitimate case. There's an oblong camera cutout that matches up with the new iPad Pro camera configuration. This means that the upcoming iPad Mini 5 will be getting a flash to go along with its camera. The rear camera will have a vertical arrangement in-line with current iPhones. It’s difficult to tell, but it looks like a headphone jack cutout is included with this case in the top right corner. There’s also a cutout in the middle of the device on the edge, bringing up the possibility for Apple’s first-gen smart connector. Although this could also be a functional part of the case not related to Apple’s hardware. Back in October, reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the iPad mini 5 would arrive in either late 2018 or early 2019. He also mentioned that it would include a “lower-cost panel” but didn’t predict a price point. Considering a low-price ...

Samsung Galaxy M30 with Exynos 7885, 4GB RAM, Android Oreo surfaces in benchmarks

It is known that Samsung is working on Galaxy M-series and the smartphones are slated to release in the coming months. The new series is expected to replace the current Galaxy J, Galaxy On, and Galaxy C series devices in the company’s lineup. The Galaxy M-series has three smartphones in development; Galaxy M10, M20, and M30 respectively. The Galaxy M30 has now appeared on the Geekbench website, revealing some of its specifications. As per the Geekbench listing, the Galaxy M30 will be powered by an Exynos 7885 SoC, 4GB of RAM and Android Oreo 8.1 onboard. Earlier reports suggest that the Galaxy M30 will come in 64 GB and 128 GB storage variants. Despite the Android 9.0 Pie roll out, the Galaxy M-series will launch with Oreo. It is common for brands to develop and test prototypes with older components and software, so, there is still a possibility for the Galaxy M30 to launch with better specs and updated software. The listed specs don’t appear very different from current Galaxy mid-range devices. So, it needs to be seen whether these would be the final specs or if Samsung would change specs for the final version. Source | Via
