Apple wins patent infringement appeal against University of Wisconsin

Back in 2014 University of Wisconsin's Alumni Research Foundation, or WARF has filed patent infringement lawsuit against Apple claiming that Apple's A series chipset on iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus smartphones infringed a 1998 patent for boosting the efficiency of integrated circuits. Apple was later ordered to pay damages of around $234 million. Apple subsequently filed an appeal and now has finally succeeded as the judgment is being reversed. Apple was originally ordered to pay a damage sum of $862M for infringement of the patent, however, the sum was later reduced to $234 millions after the judge ruled that Apple’s infringement was inadvertent rather than willful. That didn't last long as sum was subsequently doubled to $506M in 2017 as U.S. District Judge William Conley in Madison ordered to pay another $272 million on one basis that Apple continued to infringe the patent after the ruling. Apple later argued that it is invalid and even the damage calculations would have been wrong even in the event of a valid claim. Now according to reports, the court has ruled that there was no infringement. But it is not clear whether the court has ruled basing on the validity of the patent, or only on the infringement claim itself. Chief ...

Facebook security breach allowed hackers to control 50 million accounts

Facebook engineering team has clarified that it has discovered a security issue that affected almost 50 million accounts. It also mentioned that the investigation is still in its early stages but said that it’s clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook’s code that impacted “View As” a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else. This said to have allowed the attackers to steal Facebook access tokens which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook, so they don’t need to re-enter their password every time they use the app. Facebook confirmed that it has fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement. It also reset the access tokens of the almost 50 million accounts that were affected. The company is also taking steps to reset access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a “View As” look-up in the last year. This is why around 90 million users have to log in again into the Facebook. Once the user logs back in, he will be notified explaining what actually happened. Facebook also announced that it is ...

Verizon, Nokia and Qualcomm achieve 1.45Gbps advanced LTE speeds

Verizon, Nokia, and Qualcomm Technologies recently reached peak data speeds of 1.45 gigabits per second (Gbps) on LTE in a live commercial environment using six channel carrier aggregation. For the first time in the USA, three companies in a commercial environment combined six separate channels of the spectrum. This record-breaking speeds on 4G LTE were reached on Verizon's network in New York using a combination of Verizon’s licensed PCS and AWS spectrum in conjunction with four carriers of LAA (License Assisted Access) spectrum. The demonstration used Nokia’s AirScale base station and Qualcomm Technologies’ mobile test device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon  X24 LTE modem. Apple hit with patent infringement lawsuit over iMessage and FaceTime encryption tech

Finnish holdings firm MPH Technologies has filed a fresh lawsuit on Apple in federal court accusing the company of patent-infringing with products including iMessage and FaceTime. MPH Technologies attempted to license its IP to Apple in 2016.  The lawsuit is being filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The firm filed the lawsuit asserting eight patents relating to secure messaging solutions, targeting existing Apple software and services. This specially infringes on IP related to sending and forwarding messages over a secure connection. The lawsuit includes iMessage, FaceTime and Apple's always-on VPN feature, the latter being a mobile device management (MDM) solution marketed to corporations and educational institutions. According to MPH, Apple has implemented the protected tech in devices running macOS, iOS and watchOS without authorization.  MPH claims that it has informed Apple about the patent infringement in a series of emails back in July 2016, this lead to a telephonic conversation with Apple's patent acquisitions executive. This later is followed by a letter in October 2016 detailing the applicability of MPH's patents and introduced Apple to a pending patent that was later granted. Months after reviewing MPH's documents, Apple sent a letter containing conclusory statements, saying it did not "believe a license is required, as the ...

However, it is currently only available to a small number of users but will expand to more markets and users globally in the days to come. Maya Patterson, Facebook Stories Product Designer in a statement said: Adding music to your Stories goes beyond sharing what ...

Google Phone app update hints at a dark mode

Off lately Google has been adding a dark mode to its native apps including Android Messages, YouTube. Now the company might soon bring the dark mode to Google Phone app as well as it teased in the PlayStore change log a while ago. While the latest update doesn't bring the change, it sure hints at it.  Going by the screenshots, the main screen has this gradient at the top which still needs to be reversed and the setting screen has dark text which needs to be in white when the background is black. It is unclear if the contact's thumbnail will also be in dark theme, but for now, they still have light pastels. It is possible that they will go through a darkening process as they seem out of place in an otherwise dark screen. The Dark mode settings will be present under the 'Display options' in the Phone app. Furthermore, the Settings screen lost its blue title bar, switched to the white navigation bar, and added back dividing lines that used to be common when it is in Halo. We got hold of the device for some time and came with a review. Design and display Out of the box, GOQii Vital looks like any other fitness band and hasn't changed considerably. It features a rubber strap with tongue buckle at the end, which prevents hassles while wearing it. Since it has many slots in the strap, it is helpful for broad as well as narrow wrist users. To charge the device, users need to detach the rubber strap and it doesn't come with a dedicated charger. Initially, we found it difficult while detaching the unit, but also make sure that you do right otherwise, there are chances of breaking the USB. In our usage, we generally charged it by plugging it into my laptops USB port. The GOQii Vital sports an OLED color display showcasing information including time, date, day, and battery status ...
