MIUI 9.5 brings full-screen gestures to devices with 18:9 aspect ratio – Here’s how to enable it

Xiaomi was one of the manufacturers which opted for capacitive navigation keys in favor to utilize maximum screen for display, but with 18:9 devices Xiaomi had to ditch the physical keys for on-screen navigation keys as devices with new aspect ratio have minimal bezels at front. Android manufacturers have started adopting gesture support after the launch of iPhone X and Xiaomi doesn’t want to remain behind in the race. Xiaomi introduced the Full Screen gestures with MIUI Global Beta ROM back in January but till that time Mi MIX 2 was the only device launched in India with 18:9 aspect ratio. Xiaomi introduced the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India on 14th February with 18:9 ratio, Redmi Note 5 MIUI Global Beta ROM was made available to users as it is same as Redmi 5 Plus which was launched in China in Dec 2017. Google said to be testing revamped Pixel launcher search bar for Pixel 3

With every major Android release, Google revamps its Pixel launcher to accommodate the device and the new design language better. With Android P right around the corner, we now are seeing a slightly revamped Pixel launcher that will ship with the Google Pixel 3. The new revamped launcher is found by modifying the existing Pixel Launcher APK from the Google Pixel 2 to enable some hidden, in-development features of the launcher. The Pixel launcher's search bar is now split into two; one for search and one with Google mic icon. We're not sure what the purpose of this change or it is part of the rumored Material Design 2 set to be unveiled during Google I/O 2018. A similar thing happened during the Pixel 2, and the modded APK with bottom search bar was out before its release thanks to many APK modders. XDA the sole power behind the new finding has mentioned that it will soon publish an update to the modded app with these new changes available as a toggle. The in-development parameters of the latest official APK are a giveaway to prove that this revamped launcher is indeed for the Google Pixel 3. Source

Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, Note8 Always On Display update brings GIF support

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are the company's latest flagships and these phones come with some impressive features that aren't present on the 2017 flagships. However, today the company is pushing one such feature to S8 and Note8 flagships. Samsung has released an update to the Always On Display (AOD) on the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note8 that adds support for using GIF. The update lets you add a little action to the otherwise-dull clock and time Always On Display. Samsung allowed you to add themes and photos, but GIF is the latest update. You can either chose from a list of Samsung defaults or upload one from Gallery. Since we are talking about GIF, it shouldn't be long and you can trim it from the gallery. The GIF won't play for long, it just plays once when you turn the display off. If you wish to see the GIF again, just double-tap-on the screen. This limitation is put forth to reduce battery consumption. To get the new Gif animation feature, you will have to update the Always on Display from 'My Apps' and once you’ve updated, you will need to select the particular clock style that shows images on the display. ...

Apple details eGPU support in macOS 10.13.4, recommends AMD Radeon graphic cards; no NVIDIA support

Apple this week rolled out the macOS 10.13.4 that introduced official support for eGPUs (external graphics processors) on Thunderbolt 3 Macs. In the release notes, Apple has published a detailed support document that outlines how eGPU support works and provides graphics card and chassis recommendations that can be used with your Mac.  The company has listed several AMD video cards recommendations including Radeon RX 570 and RX 580, the Radeon Pro WX 7100 and 9100, and finally the Radeon RX Vega 56, 64, and Vega Frontier Edition Air. Apple has said that the support is not limited to any specific card vendor, as long as the card complies with the reference specification. However, the list does not include any cards from NVIDIA which does have the "web driver" for its PCI-E that it updates after every macOS revision. Also, the cards that were supported during the initial testing of eGPU support are no longer supported, such as the AMD RX 560. Mac users will have to use the Thunderbolt 3 since the support for earlier versions is discontinued in the beta period. Apple also lets users connect more than one eGPU, but should use direct connections instead of daisy-chaining. The company also mentioned that all have 87W of charging power available ...

Google shutting down goo.gl URL shortener in favor of Firebase Dynamic Links

Google's URL shortener; goo.gl was introduced back in 2009 and today the company has announced that it is shutting down the services and is replacing it with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL). FDLs are smart URLs that can send existing and potential users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app. Users who have never created short links before today will not be able to create new short links via the goo.gl console. Google will allow you to create new short links Firebase Dynamic Links or other alternatives like Bitly and Ow.ly. Google mentioned that all the existing goo.gl links will continue to redirect to the intended destination and users can manage them via the goo.gl console for the next year; until March 30th, 2019. Post the one-year deadline, all the links will still work, but you won't be able to access the console itself. The existing short links will not be migrated to the Firebase console, however, you will be able to export your link information from the goo.gl console. Google will also discontinue the APIs on March 30th, 2019. As for developers, FDL short links will automatically detect the user's platform and send the user to either the web or your app, whichever is appropriate. Source

Instagram restores GIF stickers from GIPHY

Earlier this month, Instagram and Snapchat removed the GIPHY integration over racial slur GIF that was spotted by users. However, Instagram has now restored the GIF stickers from GIPHY as it confirmed it has reviewed its GIF library four times and will preemptively review any new GIFs it adds.  This is the risk that most platforms face when they work with third-party developers to bring outside and crowdsourced content into their apps. Though both the companies immediately responded and took down the GIF in question, it raises the question of quality, safety, and content filtering. GIPHY said that it re-moderated its entire sticker library 4x and has also added another level of GIPHY moderation before each sticker is approved by the library.  The company is now making this moderation permanent. However, Snapchat, on the other hand, said that it didn't have anything to add at this moment and didn't mention whether it’s going to reactivate GIPHY. An Instagram spokesperson in a statement has said: We’ve been in close contact with GIPHY throughout this process and we’re confident that they have put measures in place to ensure that Instagram users have a good experience. GIPHY commenting on the same said: To anyone who was affected; we’re sorry. We take full responsibility for this recent ...

Twitter and Periscope Timestamps lets you share live videos from any specific moment

Twitter has introduced new Timestamps feature that lets you share live video or replay at any specific moment. Twitter says that it rolled out this feature after seeing user share live videos with a specific time in the video they wanted to talk about. Previously, users were only able to share the entire live video which made it difficult to discuss what matters most. Sharing Timestamps is easy; when you tap to share a live video, you can easily slide back by using the scroll bar to select the time you want others to watch, then add your thoughts, and Tweet it. Anyone who starts the video will be taken to the exact time within the video you shared. If the broadcast is still live, users can simply skip to what’s happening by tapping “live” at any time and this feature is available for any live video. Users can also share broadcasts every time something important happens, rather than just once when it begins. The feature is rolling out today and the tool to select exact timestamps is available on the Android and iOS Twitter apps, the Twitter browser site, and Periscope. Source 1, 2

Huawei patent files hint at foldable smartphone with hinge

Following the P20 launch, Huawei is now again back in the news with a foldable display. The company has patented a foldable smartphone that opens and closes like a book. The patent was filed with WIPO on September 19 last year and is only published today. The patent is titled "mobile terminal folding mechanism and mobile terminal." Going by the patent sketches, the design more or less resembles the Microsoft Surfaces' hinge design but with a much smaller gap. The display is, however, a single panel, unlike the ZTE Axon M. When opened, the smartphone looks like a tablet and might come off as a smartphone when closed. By alternating the use of soft and hard components, the mechanism can be folded whenever you want without any problems and small gaps or holes in the design are prevented. This is not the first time we are hearing about a foldable smartphone from Huawei. Back in October, Huawei speaking to CNET has mentioned that the company has a working sample of the phone but needs a better, flexible and a mechanical design and it still needs some more time to perfect the design before it launches. Will the company launch a smartphone with foldable a ...

Snapchat said to be testing ‘Connected Apps’ to let users connect to third-party apps

Facebook is caught with the data-sharing scandal which made users uninstall the apps that were previously connected to Facebook, Snapchat is surprisingly is going the same route. According to the latest beta update, Snapchat might be testing 'Connected Apps' to let users connect to third-party apps.  Snapchat is implementing the data-sharing API that lets users connect with third-party apps. There is a new  'Connected Apps' section in the settings menu. However, it doesn't show anything except the text that reads, "These apps are connected to your Snapchat account. Choose an app to control what it has access to." It's obvious that this section will soon show the list of third-party apps that are connected. Currently, Snapchat only allows Bitmoji; which Snapchat bought in 2016. Users can simply sign-up for Bitmoji via Snapchat or simply connect their accounts. Apart from Bitmoji, Shazam is another app that has integration with Snapchat. This move is to help Snapchat become its own app ecosystem like Facebook, Gmail, Twitter. With Facebook facing criticism over user data violations, the move from Snapchat is interesting for sure. Source

Google Home can now connect and stream music to Bluetooth speakers

Google Home just got better; the company now lets you connect your Home device to your personal Bluetooth speaker so you can control your entertainment experience simply using the sound of your voice. Firstly, you need to pair any compatible Bluetooth speaker with your Google Home. To pair with the speakers, you need to have the Google Home app, then in the top right corner of the app Home screen, tap Devices and find the device card for the Google Home you want to pair with a Bluetooth speaker. In the settings menu, you can set the paired Bluetooth Speaker as the default. Once it is paired, you can start using it just by saying “Hey Google, shuffle my workout playlist” or “Hey Google, turn up the volume.” Since the Bluetooth speaker will be set as default, the music will automatically play on your Bluetooth speaker without you having to tell Google the name of the device. You can also have the music follow you from your living room to other rooms as well. Just to be clear, you will still need to communicate through Google Home, but not the Bluetooth speaker. Source

Wear OS Android P developer preview with dark theme, battery improvements released

Google just released the Android P developer preview for Wear OS after re-branding the Android Wear earlier this month. The Android P developer preview is now available for Huawei Watch 2 Bluetooth, and it can be installed on either the Sport or Classic versions.  Google will enhance glanceability and has switched to a UI theme with a darker / black background in Wear OS for the notifications stream and system launcher at the start of the year and now with P developer preview. It is now the default for the system theme and should improve the glanceability for wear apps. Another big change in the Wear OS apps no longer will run in the background unless it is in charge mode. The new background restriction is more like a refinement to Doze mode on Android. However, watchfaces and complications are exceptions. The OS will now turn off the radio and will basically go into airplane mode when a user takes their watch off the body. It will only happen if the watch off for an extended period. This will be rolling out gradually so it would appear as an update that will come via the Google Play Services Framework. WiFi will not turn on when the smartwatch is disconnected ...

OnePlus 6 will have a notch, 90% screen-to-body ratio and retain headphone jack: Carl Pei

2018 has been the year of Android phones with iPhone X-style top-notch and for many obvious reasons, there has been a negative fuss surrounding it claiming to be a blunt rip off of the iPhone X.  Truth be spoken, there is no better alternative to bring in more screen real-estate without including a top notch. Yes, Apple has included a bunch of sensors including the Face ID in the top notch, and, Android-powered smartphones just have the regular sensor and front camera, but there is no better way to bring in an impressive screen-to-body ratio without designing it with a notch. Cut to the chase, the upcoming OnePlus flagship (for now dubbed as the OnePlus 6) is also said to feature the notch. However, the company says that it will be more than just another iPhone copycat. Following the negativity, Android phones with notch-designs have been receiving since the MWC 2018 launches, OnePlus has reached out to The Verge to make its point and why it thinks the change in design is a good thing. The company is far from backing out with the notch design at this stage and OnePlus like every other phone maker is opting to go this design route and is ...

Facebook reportedly delays Home-Speaker launch over user-data privacy violation crisis

Facebook was expected to introduce the smart Home-Speaker at the F8 event in May but now it looks like the company has delayed its plans amid data-privacy practices and the outrage surrounding it, according to industry sources.  The company's new hardware products, connected speakers with digital-assistant and video-chat capabilities are currently under review to ensure that they make the right trade-offs with the user data. The new hardware products are a part of the Facebook’s plan to become more involved with users’ everyday social lives taking advantage of the artificial intelligence much like how Amazon is doing with its Echo devices. With user-data privacy violations, FTC investigation and outrage among common users now is the wrong time for Facebook to make an announcement of the same. As expected, Facebook declined to comment on the reports. However, Facebook is still planning to launch the products later this year when the crisis gets over. It is expected that the company would reveal new, more restrictive rules about what kind of information Facebook can collect on their users. Source
