Apple AirPods 2 with wireless charging case, Siri integration said to go on sale on March 29

Apple is rumored to be holding a special event on March 25th where it is expected to make announcements regarding its new Service based offerings. Sources from internal operations of suppliers in the Asia-Pacific market now suggest that AirPods 2 might be added to the list of announcements on March 25th and would hit the stores on March 29th. Even though no hardware announcements are expected at its March 25 event, it might be introduced with just a release. This means that March 28th would be the last day of the "life cycle" of the original AirPods. The AirPods 1 are rumored to be taken off the stores on March 28th, in a move to prep for AirPods 2 sale. The new generation AirPods will come with wireless charging case and Siri integration. This development falls in-line with noted analyst Ming-Cho Kuo who predicted that the new AirPods with wireless charging case will debut in Q1 2019. After AirPods 2 launch, Apple would bring an all-new design model” that will be introduced in Q1 2020 and these new refreshed models are expected to drive strong sales growth for AirPods. Kuo notes that fewer than 5% of iPhone users currently own AirPods, and with over 1 billion iPhone ...

Google Chrome working on back/forward cache to speed up web browsing

Google Chrome developers are experimenting on a new 'back/forward cache' that would make loading the previous page instant since if you close a web page on the browser, it has to load most of the page again which is time-consuming.  Chrome engineering manager Addy Osmani, on the Google Developers site, mentioned, "we are exploring a new back/forward cache to cache pages in-memory (preserving JavaScript & DOM state) when the user navigates away. This is definitely not a trivial endeavor but if it succeeds it will make navigating back and forth very fast." This means when you click on a link on a page, this feature will keep the original page frozen in memory. If you press back, the frozen page is instantly resumed. The Chrome team estimates this could "improve performance up to 19% of all navigation" on the Android version. This doesn't mean that Chrome is the only browser to be working on this, Firefox back in 2005 has used back/forward caching to some extent since Firefox 1.5, but it seems to be disabled for HTTPS sites. Safari has also had a variant of it since 2009. Since this feature is still in the early stages, and there is still security and compatibly issues to figure ...

YouTube disables comments on videos featuring kids; introduces new comment classifier

With an aim to improve child safety on YouTube, the company over the past week, we disabled comments from tens of millions of videos that could be subject to predatory behavior. These efforts are focused on videos featuring young minors. It said that it will continue to identify videos at risk over the next few months. YouTube added that it will broaden this action to suspend comments on videos featuring young minors and videos featuring older minors that could be at risk of attracting predatory behavior. However, a small number of creators will be able to keep comments enabled on these types of videos. These channels will be required to actively moderate their comments, beyond just using our moderation tools, and demonstrate a low risk of predatory behavior. YouTube ensures that this does not affect the monetization of videos. It has a new comment classifier in place and will detect and remove 2X more individual comments. Videos encouraging harmful and dangerous challenges targeting any audience are also against the company's policies and said that it will continue to take action. Source

Samsung now allows remapping Bixby key on Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, S9 and S8 series

Samsung has finally decided to allow users to remap the Bixby key on its flagships S10-series that allows you to launch a third-party app using the key. Since it is a software feature, Samsung has rolled the same to remap the Bixby key feature on the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9/S9+ and the Galaxy S8/S8+. Once the update is installed from the Galaxy Store, just go to Advanced features in the Settings app and then to Bixby key. You will be presented with two options. You can either set a third-party app to launch with a single or double press of the key. This means you can remap either a single or double press, not both. The option you don’t select will continue to launch Bixby Home. A long press will always bring up Bixby Voice. This doesn't let users completely disable the Bixby key entirely and never open Bixby Home, but still a positive feature. It also doesn't let you map the key to launch Google Assistant. Samsung is making sure that Bixby Home doesn't get shut out by users for good. As said, it is available now for the Galaxy Note 9, Note 8, Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy ...

Wehner further said the feature will make it harder for Facebook to use data collected by third parties to target ads to users."Broadly, [clear history is] going to give us some headwinds in terms of being able to target as effectively as before," said Wehner. CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the announcement said the feature would "be a simple control to clear your browsing history on Facebook -- what you've clicked on, websites you've visited, and so on. You'll even be able to turn off having this information stored with your account." The Clear History feature was proposed by Zuckerberg to his team in a reaction to the company's Cambridge Analytica scandal last March, according to reports. The company made an announcement when it was still in the idea stage. Source

Razer Phone 2 Android Pie update starts rolling out

Razer confirmed that it will be rolling out the Android 9.0 Pie update to the Razer Phone 2 this week. Keeping its word, the company has now started rolling out the Pie update. Since this is a staged rollout, it might not be available for everyone right away. Android P brings Adaptive Battery that uses machine learning to prioritize system resources for the apps, App Actions that helps you raise the visibility of your app and help drive engagement using machine learning, and Slices are a new way to surface rich, templated content in places like Google Search and Assistant. It brings the new gesture navigation system, notification management, and digital wellbeing which displays how long you’ve been using certain apps, ability to restrict the usage, graphs, and visuals detailing how many times you unlock your phone per day and how many notifications you receive, and much more. The update also brings February security patch, and ability to record 720p/1080p/4K videos at 60fps. The update is around 1.5GB in size and should be rolled out gradually to everyone. USB 3.2 with 20Gbps speeds coming to high-end PCs later this year; USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 merged under new USB 3.2 branding

The discrete USB 3.2 controllers that are capable of supporting the standard's new 20 Gb/s Type-C mode will be available this year. Since the discrete USB controllers are used mostly by high-performance systems, we are most likely going to see the first USB 3.2 chips to land on high-end motherboards first. If that is the case, we can see motherboard vendors showcasing off the products sometime in the second half of this year. Meanwhile, peripherals will likely lag a bit for compatibility testing and in this case, we might start seeing them in 2020. In terms of bandwidth, the USB 3.2 introduces the ability to use two high-speed USB Type-C Tx/Rx channels – the so-called x2 mode – to get 20 Gbps maximum throughput on a Type-C cable. The technology retains the USB 3.1 physical layer data rates and encoding techniques. As USB 3.2 hosts and devices roll out on the market, we will see USB 3.2 gen 1 branding (5Gbps SuperSpeed) USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps SuperSpeed+) USB 3.2 Gen2x2 (2x10Gbps SuperSpeed+) Meaning, while all future products will be 3.2, they won't necessarily support the higher 10Gbps and 20Gbps data rates. TikTok agrees to settle $5.7 million FTC fine over children’s privacy law violations

Owing to the alleged children’s privacy law violations, TikTok has agreed to pay $5.7 million to settle accusations. The short-form video app is also required to get parental approval for users under 13 years of age, to comply with the federal law. All the videos that were previously uploaded by users under the age of 13 will be removed as well. The FTC alleged that TikTok “illegally collected personal information from children” by not obtaining their parents’ permission before they signed up, putting it in violation of COPPA — the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. “The operators of Musical.ly — now known as TikTok — knew many children were using the app but they still failed to seek parental consent before collecting names, email addresses, and other personal information from users under the age of 13,” FTC Chairman Joe Simons said in a press release. This new app experience now allows the company to split users into age-appropriate TikTok environments, in line with FTC guidance for mixed audience apps. The new environment for younger users does not permit the sharing of personal information, and it puts extensive limitations on content and user interaction. Both current and new TikTok users will be directed to the age-appropriate app ...

Update - February 27, 2019: Now you can enable this feature in Chome Canary from chrome://flags and enabling #enable-android-web-contents-dark-mode. The dark mode looks a bit weird in some web pages since it inverts images colors looking more like high contrast mode than dark mode. This is also available for the web. Earlier: Google is known to be working on bringing dark mode for Android and the web. The latest development in this regard reveals that a new code change indicates that Chrome for Android will recolor web pages as well when using the browser’s upcoming dark mode. With the inclusion of dark mode in a wide variety of Google apps and the addition of system-wide dark mode in Android Q. Google seems to be giving high priority to dark mode this year. Similar to Samsung's browser, Google for Chrome may be employing a similar strategy for its own dark mode where it turns the web pages into the dark for more pleasing reading experience at night. The change adds a new Chrome flag, #enable-android-web-contents-dark-mode, whose name alone makes its purpose fairly clear. Digging a little deeper, it is evident what the new flag will actually do. When the flag is enabled, a preference is toggled in Blink, Chrome’s underlying engine, called “force_dark_mode_enabled”. ...

HTC Exodus 1 gets new blockchain features, can now be purchased with real money

HTC's EXODUS 1 which was announced back in 2018 is now expanding its reach to non-crypto natives, meaning users who wish to buy the phone can now use real money, instead of using cryptocurrency. The Exodus 1 was available for pre-order in October, but users had to pay in crypto: either 0.15 bitcoin or 4.78 Ether.  While 0.15 bitcoin or 4.78 Ether meant around $1000 back then, the volatile crypto market brought down the value to $571 or $644. Google Play Protect scanned over 50 billion apps everyday in 2018 protecting over 2 billion devices

Google's Play Protect scanned over 50 billion apps every day for harmful behavior in 2018 protecting over 2 billion devices in the Android ecosystem every day. In 2018, the company launched a new feature that notifies users when they are installing new or rare apps. It shows a warning, giving users pause to consider whether they want to trust this app. Once Google has fully analyzed the app and determined that it is not harmful, the notification will no longer display. In 2018, this warning showed around 100,000 times per day. Google recently enabled a security feature first introduced in Android Oreo which warns users when they are about to launch a potentially harmful app on their device. This new warning dialog provides in-context information about the app the user is about to launch, why it think it may be harmful and what might happen if they open the app. In the notification, Google also provides clear guidance on what to do next. These in-context dialogs ensure that users are protected even if they accidentally missed an alert. Back in 2018, the company has added the ability to detect harmful apps that are installed from Play but were later found to have ...

Google Docs gets AI-based grammar correction

Google introduced spell check in Google Docs seven years ago, and now it has announced that it will be using machine translation techniques for grammatical errors, with grammar suggestions in Docs. G Suite Basic, Business and Enterprise customers will start to see inline, contextual grammar suggestions in their documents as they type, just like spellcheck. If you’ve made a grammar mistake, a squiggly blue line will appear under the phrase as you write it. You can choose to accept the suggestion by right-clicking it. Since this feature is built right into in Docs, you don’t have to rely on third-party apps to do the work. Because grammar is typically harder to tackle, Google is using machine translation to build a model that can incorporate the complexity and nuances of grammar correction. Using machine translation, Google will be able to recognize errors and suggest corrections as work is getting done. The company worked closely with linguists to decipher the rules for the machine translation model and used this as the foundation of automatic suggestions in Docs, all powered by AI. By doing this, machine translation techniques can catch a range of different corrections, from simple grammatical rules to more complex grammatical concepts. Source

Samsung starts mass production of 512GB eUFS 3.0 with 2100 MB/s speeds for smartphones

Samsung Electronics has announced that it has begun mass production of the industry’s first 512GB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 3.0 for next-generation mobile devices. In line with the latest eUFS 3.0 specification, the new Samsung memory delivers twice the speed of the previous eUFS storage (eUFS 2.1). Samsung’s 512GB eUFS 3.0 packs eight of the company’s 5th-gen 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND die and integrates a high-performance controller. At 2,100 MB/s, the new eUFS doubles the sequential read rate of Samsung’s latest eUFS memory (eUFS 2.1). Samsung says the new solution’s read speed is four times faster than that of a SATA solid state drive (SSDs) and 20 times faster than a typical microSD card. In addition, the sequential write speed also has been improved by 50 percent to 410MB/s, which is equivalent to that of a SATA SSD. The new memory’s random read and write speeds are at 63,000 and 68,000 Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS), respectively. With the significant gains in random read and writes that are more than 630 times faster than general microSD cards (100 IOPS), a number of complex applications can be simultaneously run, while achieving enhanced responsiveness, especially on the newest generation of mobile devices. Apart from 512GB ...

OnePlus confirms OnePlus 7 won’t feature wireless charging

OnePlus is working on its next flagship which is likely to be called the OnePlus 7. The flagship will be powered by the Snapdragon 855, feature upgraded camera, latest software and more, but one thing that looks uncertain is the wireless charging. OnePlus fans for a while now are rooting for the wireless charging, given how the back panel on OnePlus 6 and 6T is glass. According to CEO Pete Lau, the company still doesn't think it's worth adding to its products."OnePlus charging is one of the best. Wireless charging is far inferior." Even though OnePlus phones usually pack flagship level hardware features, wireless charging somehow is missing from the action. Samsung stepped up the wireless charging game by adding the ability to wirelessly charge its Galaxy Buds with its Galaxy S10. At the MWC 2019 show, OnePlus has showcased the prototype of its 5G smartphone which will come to two carriers in Europe in the second quarter. Lau declined to comment on the OnePlus 7, as well as the rumors surrounding the pop-up camera. Lau notes that it takes a long time to charge a device with a wireless pad. With the physical quick charge plug, OnePlus says, you can get ...
