KrØØk Wi-Fi encryption vulnerability affects billions of devices
It seems like every other day, we get news of the discovery of another security vulnerability that affects a lot of our devices. Yesterday, a report published by ESET Research explains the discovery of Kr00k vulnerability that allows an attacker to decrypt wireless network packets. The kr00k vulnerability was discovered when ESET researchers were studying into the Key Reinstallation Attacks (KRACK) on Amazon Echo devices. It causes the vulnerable devices to use an all-zero encryption key to encrypt part of the user’s communication. This makes it possible for attackers to decrypt packets of information that are being transmitted over the network. It affects all devices with Broadcom and Cypress Wi-Fi chips which estimates to more than a billion WiFi-enabled devices. Some the manufactures that were confirmed to be affected by the Kr00k vulnerability is Amazon with their Echo and Kindle, Apple with their iPhone, iPad and MacBook, Google on the Nexus devices, Samsung with their Galaxy devices, Raspberry Pi 3 and Xiaomi with their Redmi devices. Broadcom and Cypress have since released patches to fix the vulnerability which have been by most major manufacturers. Apple to open its first retail store in India in 2021, online store this year: Tim Cook
Rumors about Apple's own retail outlet in India has been surfacing for quite some time now. Yesterday at its annual shareholders meeting at Steve Jobs Theater Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that Apple will open its first retail store in India in 2021. He said that the company had to seek special approval for this because the Indian government wanted it to work with a partner. “We wouldn’t be a very good partner in retail. We like to do things our way,” he said. He also said that Apple will start selling its products on its online store starting this year. The company is currently selling its products online on Flipkart, Amazon.in, Paytm Mall, and offline through third-party brand-authorized retailers. A report from last year said that Apple has chosen Mumbai’s Maker Maximity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) as the venue for its first own India outlet and added that Apple has leased around 20,000-25,000 sq ft space for its outlet and is spread over three floors in the Maker Maximity Mall. Apple iOS devices could get over-the-air OS recovery soon
Based on code found iOS 13.4 beta, Apple may be testing a method of recovery for iOS based devices via the internet. This will reduce the dependance on devices such as the iPhone, iPad and others on the Mac or PC for restoring its firmware. At the moment, when these devices require an OS restore, users will need to connect it to a Mac or PC to download the device's firmware. Other devices like the HomePod or Apple Watch do not even have physical connectors to be able to perform a restore by the user. The new feature was spotted in the third beta of iOS 13.4 under the name 'OS recovery'. With it, users will be prompted to connect to the internet, after which Apple will directly download the device firmware to be able to restore it. This feature will work similar to how macOS Internet Recovery, which has existed for many years now, allowing the operating system to download a copy over the internet without another computer. It is unclear whether the feature will arrive with iOS 13.4 or will be slated to release with iOS 14. Another point to note is that this feature will be highly useful for the ...
