Arm Cortex-A76AE 7nm ‘autonomous-class’ car processor announced; Safety Ready Program initiative unveiled

Arm today has announced Safety Ready Program that is aimed to develop solutions for self-driving cars and has also launched the Cortex-A76AE; its first processor IP designed specifically for autonomous vehicles. The  Cortex-A76AE processor comes integrated with redundancy and can compute complex relies on up to 16 Cortex-A76 cores.  The Cortex-A76AE can scale to up to 64 cores and has the ability to deliver the aforementioned performance, at high safety integrity. It achieves this through a significant redesign of the Cortex-A76 thus becoming the first high-performance Cortex-A CPU to include the Dual Core Lock-Step (DCLS) and Split-Lock features. The Cortex-A76AE is capable of running in Dual Core Lock-Step (DCLS), and hence is able to contribute towards a system’s ASIL D hardware diagnostic coverage requirements. It comes with memory protection as standard. It supports Single Error Correction, Double Error Detection (SECDED) ECC and Parity protection in the L1 cache, and SECDED ECC protection with the ability to correct in-line, on the L2 and L3 caches. As a part of the Armv8.2 architecture extension, Cortex-A76AE includes RAS features built in. It also includes comparators, which are integrated into the design. The Cortex-A76AE has been developed on an advanced process for the avoidance of systematic faults. This enables it ...

Verizon, Nokia and Qualcomm achieve 1.45Gbps advanced LTE speeds

Verizon, Nokia, and Qualcomm Technologies recently reached peak data speeds of 1.45 gigabits per second (Gbps) on LTE in a live commercial environment using six channel carrier aggregation. For the first time in the USA, three companies in a commercial environment combined six separate channels of the spectrum. This record-breaking speeds on 4G LTE were reached on Verizon's network in New York using a combination of Verizon’s licensed PCS and AWS spectrum in conjunction with four carriers of LAA (License Assisted Access) spectrum. The demonstration used Nokia’s AirScale base station and Qualcomm Technologies’ mobile test device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon  X24 LTE modem. The demonstration in New York also used LTE Advanced feature, 256 QAM for uploads and 4x4 MIMO. In mid-2018, Verizon announced these technologies were available in over 1,100 markets nationwide. Stephen Marino, Senior Vice President, Verizon Account Team, Nokia. By using the Nokia AirScale, which is designed for 5G, we have taken an important step on the road to 5G, both in terms of customer data rate experience and network infrastructure. Bill Stone, Vice President of Technology Planning and Development for Verizon said: When we first launched our LTE network, we knew there would be a lot of room for innovation and to expand its capabilities. ...

Apple hit with patent infringement lawsuit over iMessage and FaceTime encryption tech

Finnish holdings firm MPH Technologies has filed a fresh lawsuit on Apple in federal court accusing the company of patent-infringing with products including iMessage and FaceTime. MPH Technologies attempted to license its IP to Apple in 2016.  The lawsuit is being filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The firm filed the lawsuit asserting eight patents relating to secure messaging solutions, targeting existing Apple software and services. This specially infringes on IP related to sending and forwarding messages over a secure connection. The lawsuit includes iMessage, FaceTime and Apple's always-on VPN feature, the latter being a mobile device management (MDM) solution marketed to corporations and educational institutions. According to MPH, Apple has implemented the protected tech in devices running macOS, iOS and watchOS without authorization.  MPH claims that it has informed Apple about the patent infringement in a series of emails back in July 2016, this lead to a telephonic conversation with Apple's patent acquisitions executive. This later is followed by a letter in October 2016 detailing the applicability of MPH's patents and introduced Apple to a pending patent that was later granted. Months after reviewing MPH's documents, Apple sent a letter containing conclusory statements, saying it did not "believe a license is required, as the ...

Facebook testing the ability to add music to photos and videos on news feed and Stories

Back in June, it was reported that Facebook is testing with a set of users giving them the ability to add copyrighted music to their photos. Looks like the company is expanding the same; starting this week, Facebook users will see the option to add songs to their photo and video posts. This feature will be available for both Stories and News Feed posts. You can upload a photo/video, then tap on the sticker icon and choose the music sticker from the list of songs. After you have chosen the track, Facebook will load the song, giving you an option to choose which portion of the tune to use. The post will show the title of the song and its artist in a sticker on your post. The company has been partnering with the music industry to make Lip Sync Live and the ability to add music to 360-degree videos. This marks the good use of its partnerships to expand music-related offerings to users. However, it is currently only available to a small number of users but will expand to more markets and users globally in the days to come. Maya Patterson, Facebook Stories Product Designer in a statement said: Adding music to your Stories goes beyond sharing what ...
