LG Q1 2019 profits down 20.8% YoY due to weak smartphone sales

LG Electronics has reported revenues of 14.92 trillion won (US$ 13.27 billion) for the first quarter that ended March 31st, 2019, which is down 1.3% compared to the same quarter last year, as expected. It posted profits of 900.6 billion won (US$ 801.25 million), down 18.7% YoY, while net profit was down 20.8% YoY to 578 billion won. Decrease in profits is primarily due to lackluster sales in mobile business. "Although overall first-quarter revenues and operating income declined somewhat in 2019 versus 2018, the home appliance company reported record first-quarter sales and profits. Operating income was 1,090 percent higher than the fourth quarter of 2018, reflecting improved cost structures across major business units," said LG. Mobile Communications sector reported a quarterly revenue of 1.51 trillion won (US$ 1.34 billion), down 9.8% QoQ and 29.2% YoY due to sluggish demand in the smartphone market and global expansion strategy of Chinese companies. Samsung’s Q1 2019 profits down 60% YoY, mobile profits down 39.7% YoY

Samsung has reported its earnings for Q4 2018, in which the company has made operating profit of 6.23 trillion won, down 60.1% YoY, as expected, for the January to March 2019 period. This due to drop in demand for memory chips and displays, although the newly launched Galaxy S10 smartphone logged solid sales, said Samsung. It reported revenue of 52.39 trillion won, down 13.4% YoY from 60.56 trillion won last year.  IM sector that includes Mobile Communications and Networks Businesses posted 27.20 trillion won consolidated revenue, down 4.39% YoY and 2.27 trillion won operating profit for the quarter, down 39.7% compared to 3.77 trillion won in the same quarter last year. In the IT & Mobile Communications (IM) Division, despite solid sales of the Galaxy S10, profitability in the mobile business declined YoY as competition intensified in the low- to mid-range segment. Previously the company had been offering Rs. 49 data pack with 3GB data with 1 day validity and 6GB data pack at Rs. 98 with 7 days validity, while the 28-day pack was Rs. 175. The new data packs are targeted at those who use less data every day. Earlier this month the company launched Rs. 248 FRC with 1.4GB data per days for 28 days.

Redmi smartphone with pop-up front camera, Snapdragon 855 teased officially

After rumors, Xiaomi's Redmi brand has official posted a teaser of its upcoming flagship smartphone. This shows a pop-up front camera and a no-notch display. Redmi President Lu Weibing already confirmed that the phone will be powered by Snapdragon 855 and retain the 3.5mm audio jack. He also said that the phone will offer good performance, longer battery life, better camera, higher screen-to-body ratio with pop-up camera design. Earlier rumors revealed that the phone will come with a 6.39-inch FHD+ no-notch display, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, 48MP primary rear camera, 8MP telephoto lens and a 13MP ultra-wide angle lens as well as 32-megapixel pop-up  front camera. Last week Xiaomi India VP confirmed that the company will launch a new smartphone with Snapdragon 730, and earlier rumors revealed a pop-up front camera and 3.5mm audio jack. Apple removes third-party parental control apps due to privacy and security reasons

In general, the Cupertino giant Apple has always believed that parents should have tools to manage their children’s device usage. Having said that, the company recently removed several parental control apps from the App Store. According to the company, these apps put users’ privacy and security at risk. To be more specific, several of these parental control apps were using a highly invasive technology called Mobile Device Management, or MDM. MDM gives a third party control and access over a device and its most sensitive information including user location, app use, email accounts, camera permissions, and browsing history. On the other hand, MDM does have legitimate uses, explains Apple. Businesses will sometimes install MDM on enterprise devices to keep better control over proprietary data and hardware. Beyond the control that the app itself can exert over the user's device, research has shown that MDM profiles could be used by hackers to gain access for malicious purposes. The company communicated these violations to the app developers, giving them 30 days to submit an updated app to avoid availability interruption in the App Store. OPPO recently introduced A1k, the company’s new budget smartphone in Russia. The smartphone flaunts a 6.1-inch HD+ display, is powered by MediaTek Helio P22 SoC, runs Android Pie with ColorOS 6.0 and more. After the launch in Russia last week, today, OPPO has reportedly started selling the smartphone through offline stores in India for Rs. 8490.  There is no information on the online availability of the OPPO A1k as of now. The smartphone has a 6.1-inch HD+ Waterdrop Notch display with 87.43% screen-to-body ratio, is powered by MediaTek Helio P22 SoC, runs Android Pie with ColorOS 6.0 on top, has an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel camera on the front. Motorola Razr (2019) foldable smartphone surfaces in images

After rumors and patent earlier this year, the Motorola Razr (2019), the company's first foldable smartphone has surfaced in press shots on weibo in China. This shows resemblance to the iconic Razr handset, but this has display on the top and the bottom half that expands to reveal a large screen. The hinge is clearly visibly, and there is also a Motorola logo on the back. This resembles the patent. This shows a unique box with razr branding on the top. The box contents reveals a charging dock and also a USB Type-C to 3.5mm converter, so the phone won't feature a 3.5mm audio jack. Reliance Jio leads feature phone market in India in Q1 2019

Jio launched its feature phone, JioPhone in June 2017 in India. The phone sported a candy bar design, came with support for 4G VoLTE and had support for 22 Indian languages.  The successor to the JioPhone i.e., JioPhone 2 with QWERTY keyboard was launched in July 2018. Jio saw great sales of both the smartphones and today, new reports have emerged that Jio becomes the leader in the feature phone market. According to Counterpoint Research which is a global research firm specializing in mobile & technology products, Reliance JioPhone became the leader in the feature phone market in Q1 2019 with a market share of 30 percent. Xiaomi India head and VP Manu Jain has announced that he has met Rajen Vagadia, VP and President Qualcomm India and Kedar Kondap, VP, product management, Qualcomm regarding the next Xiaomi smartphone that will be powered by Snapdragon 7 series SoC that was announced two weeks back. This should be the Snapdragon 730 that was introduced on April 9th. Realme RMX1901 with 6.5-inch no-notch display, dual rear cameras gets certified

Two new Realme smartphones with model numbers RMX1901 and RMX1851 have been certified by TENAA in China. The RMX1851 is the Realme 3 Pro that was launched in India earlier this week, but the RMX1901 is a new model. The image shows a no notch on the front, so there might be a pop-up camera, gradient back, AI dual rear cameras and possibly an in-display fingerprint scanner since the is no fingerprint scanner on the back. Early specifications revealed are 6.5-inch no-notch display, which will likely come with Full HD+ resolution, similar to the Realme 3 Pro, dimensions of 161.2×76×9.4mm and a 3680mAh (minimum) battery, probably with VOOC 3.0 fast charging. Xiaomi has announced its 1000th Mi Store in India today located in Rewari, Haryana. In addition to the Mi Store launch, Xiaomi India also announced the launch of 'Mi Studio' which is the company's latest addition to its new retail concept.
