Netflix, Prime Video, Hotstar and others suspend HD video streaming on cellular data in India
Just as YouTube announced that they will default to Standard definition streaming on their platform worldwide, many Indian companies in the digital content industry have announced that they will all be lowering to SD quality when content is streamed over cellular connections. Just in the last few days, there has been an increase of about 20-30 per cent increase in data demand, caused by an increasing amount of population staying at home from quarantine. To ensure that the networks stay reliable and continue to work unhindered, major digital content companies have agreed to either default HD and ultra-HD streaming to SD content, at 480p bitrates on cellular networks. The companies include Star & Disney India, Sony, Google, Facebook, Viacom18, Amazon Prime Video, Zee, Tiktok, Netflix, MX Player, Hotstar. These measure will be put in place till April 14th, during which the country will be on lockdown, as directed by the government. Xiaomi Mi 10 India launch event postponed
Last week Xiaomi announced the launch of its flagship Mi 10 smartphone in India on March 31st after it was introduced in China last month. Today the Xiaomi India head and VP Manu Jain has announced that the event will be postponed to later date due to the current situation in the country. Even realme and vivo have postponed their smartphone launch events that were supposed to take place this week in India. Samsung ships one million 10nm EUV DRAM modules
Samsung, the leader at memory chips has just announced that they shipped one million units of its 10nm-class (D1x) DDR4 DRAM modules that were manufactured using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology. It was previously undergoing global customer evaluations and now will be available for use for premium PC, mobile, enterprise server and datacenter applications. Samsung is the first company to use the Extreme Ultraviolet Technology (EUV) to manufacture DRAM and scale its production. They had to overcome multiple challenges like repetitive steps in multi-patterning and improving patterning accuracy, with the result of achieving enhanced performance and greater yields. Samsung has also stated that they will begin volume production of D1a-based DDR5 and LPDDR5 next year. YouTube to set Standard definition quality as default worldwide
Just two days ago, most majors streaming and social media companies decided to lower their content streaming quality in the European Union, in an effort to prevent internet gridlock. Now, YouTube has announced that it will make Standard Definition (480p) as the default for streaming content worldwide, including India (until April 14). To be clear, YouTube is not completely removing High Definition streaming from its platform. It is only making Standard definition as the default. Users who wish to stream in higher quality will have the option to do so manually. Initially, YouTube had only implemented this in the EU, but now they have announced that they will be making this change for all countries worldwide. At the moment, other companies like Netflix, Prime, etc. have already lowered their streaming bit rate in the EU.
