Worldwide Tablet shipments sees 0.6% YoY decline for Q4 2019; Apple continues lead with 36.5% market share: IDC
The tablet market continues to suffer as the global shipments in Q4 2019 dropped to 43.5 million units, marking a decline of 0.6% compared to Q4 last year. Apple continues to lead the market with its highly successful iPad series with Samsung, HUAWEI, Amazon.com and Lenovo taking the next 4 spots in global shipments and market share. The iPad continues to be the world most popular tablet, with Apple seeing a growth of about 22.7% YoY and a market share over double the next company, at 36.5%. With the release of iPadOS, Apple has seated itself as the best tablet maker for the conceivable future. At second position, even though it saw a decline of 7.4% YoY, Samsung saw a comeback to the spot with 7 million units sold. Although the Tab S product lineup saw a growth during this quarter, it could not offset the overall decline. Shipping 4 million units, HUAWEI took up the third spot in Q4 2019, calculating a YoY decline of 2.8%. Though the company saw record growth in the Asia/Chine market, the ban from USA is still affecting the company, causing its global shipments to fall. At 4th and 5th place, we have Amazon.com and Lenovo with 3.3 ...

HMD Global MWC 2020 event set for February 23, Nokia 8.2, 9.2 and more expected
Mobile World Congress (MWC) is set to begin starting February 24 and many brands have announced their MWC presence. Recently, vivo and Sony announced an event on February 24th, and on similar lines, HMD Global has now announced an event on February 23rd where the company is expected to unveil mid-range smartphones and feature phones. HMD Global has sent out press invites and the invite just reads "SAVE THE DATE" along with the date and time. The invite doesn't reveal much information, but going by rumors, HMD Global could announce mid-range smartphones and Android-based featured phones including the Nokia 8.2, Nokia 400 4G, and among others. While the company announced the Nokia 9 PureView at MWC 2019, the chances are minimal that the company will announce its successor i.e., Nokia 9.2 at MWC 2020 and instead it could be unveiled later this year. It is to be seen what HMD Global will announce at MWC 2020, and we should know more information in the coming days. The event will start at 4 PM CST (7:30 PM IST) and HMD Global will offer live streaming.
OnePlus joins Wireless Power Consortium, OnePlus 8 series could support Qi wireless charging
OnePlus is the latest company to join Wireless Power Consortium, a group of companies for developing and promoting the Qi wireless charging standard. This indicates that future OnePlus will have Qi wireless charging, and this should be the OnePlus 8 series expected to launch in mid-2020. OnePlus is now listed on the WPC’s member list, however, it is not clear when they joined. Joining the consortium is a requirement for creating devices that use Qi wireless charging. OnePlus' current or past phones only had support for wired fast charging with the latest fast charging tech being Warp Charge 30T, and the company even denied wireless charging during the OnePlus 7 launch. “OnePlus charging is one of the best. Wireless charging is far inferior,” said the company's CEO Pete Lau last year. OnePlus recently introduced Quad HD+ OLED ‘Fluid Display’ with a refresh rate of 120Hz, 240Hz touch sampling rate, 10-bit HDR support, and is expected to be used in the OnePlus 8 Pro. Source
Worldwide smartphone shipments decline 2.3% YoY in 2019, Samsung leads with 21.6% share, HUAWEI surpasses Apple: Reports
Worldwide smartphone shipments decreased 1.1% year over year in Q4 2019, and it was down 2.3% YoY for the whole 2019, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. In total, companies shipped a 368.8 million smartphones during Q4 2019, and the total shipments for 2019 was 1371 million. This is third consecutive year of falling shipments despite the launch of 5G and foldable phones. The overall decline was partly due to weak shipment growth in China, where consumers are still waiting for cheaper 5G handsets to hit the market alongside increased network coverage and 5G speeds, according to IDC. Apple tops with 20% share, up 7.9% YoY in Q4 2019, thanks to strong performance in the holiday quarter, similar to 2018. Samsung grabbed 18.8% share and saw 1.2% YoY decline, and HUAWEI grabbed the third spot with 15.2%. Xiaomi grabbed 8.9% share which is a 31.1% increase YoY with strong sales of Redmi 8/Note 8 series in the Indian market, and OPPO saw 4.2% increase with 8.3% market share. Coming to full 2019 share, Samsung leads with 21.6% share, which is a 1.2% increase compared to 2018. HUAWEI grabbed the second spot with 17.6% share, ...

Caltech wins patent infringement lawsuit as Apple and Broadcom ordered to pay $1.1 Billion
In this years biggest jury verdict from this year, Apple Inc. and Broadcom Inc. have been ordered by a California Court to pay a collective $1.1 billion in damages for patent infringement. The plaintiff in this case is California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech.) who claimed that Apple broke patent laws by using Broadcom WiFi chips in their devices. Apple has been ordered to pay $837.8 million while Broadcom was hit with a $270.2 million verdict to pay Cal Tech. The case was based on Cal Tech claiming that the companies violated over a range of patents related to wireless data transmissions. The lawsuit was filed back in 2016 and it claimed that Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, iPods, Apple Watches, Mac computers, HomePod smart speakers, and the since-discontinued AirPort wireless routers have been using patent infringing Broadcom components. Apple and Broadcom did confirm that they will appeal the verdict, denying the infringement of the patents at all. Their lawyers also do not agree with how much significant damages CalTech is entitled to even if they were using the inventions. A spokesperson from Caltech, upon hearing the verdict, said that Caltech is, "pleased the jury found that Apple and Broadcom infringed Caltech patent," and ...
