DJI to roll out Geofencing 2.0 in 32 European countries

A three-dimensional "bow-tie" geofence will soon prevent DJI's drones from being able to fly too close to major European airports. The company will roll out its Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) 2.0 system across 19 European countries that did not already have the GEO system in phases. The company's drones already included geofencing technology since 2013, the new tech, which is developed by aviation tech company Altitude Angel expands the restricted zone from a simple two-dimensional circle to a much larger three-dimensional zone. This move comes after the drone sightings that caused Gatwick, the UK’s second-largest airport, to shut down in the run-up to Christmas that grounded hundreds of flights. Both Gatwick and Heathrow airports have also purchased their own anti-drone systems in the wake of the disruption. DJI’s new system, dubbed Geospatial Environment Online (GEO) 2.0, uses three different sizes of the exclusion zone, depending on the size of the airport. It restricts flights in an oval around the runway itself, the geofence also includes an “Altitude Zone” at both ends of the airport. This last zone is three-dimensional, meaning you can still fly a drone at lower altitudes once you’re far enough away from the runway. Apart from the UK, DJI says the update will be ...

Apple patent hints at a phone with a flexible display

It looks like the foldable tech is slowly catching up, as OEMs including Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung are all  working on a foldable phone for quite some time. New company to join the list is Apple who has updated a patent with drawings of a foldable clamshell phone. This is a continuation of a patent originally filed in 2011 and updated in 2016 with a drawing of what looks like an iPhone with a flexible display. The timing of this update makes this interesting. On February 20th, Samsung is expected to introduce a foldable phone along with the new Galaxy S10. The new drawing shows a phone that folds up in half, somewhat similar to Motorola's patent for an updated Razr phone. On the other hand, Samsung and Xiaomi's approach is more about transforming a phone into a mini-tablet. Apple drawing shows incorporating of hinges and housing around a flexible OLED display to make it bend. The drawings show flexible screens folding up inward and outward which could indicate use in something beyond a phone like a MacBook or iPad. Do note that Apple's patent for a flexible display means no guarantee that the company will release a foldable iPhone is 2019 or ...

Apple acquires AI Voice App startup Pullstring

Apple has acquired San-Francisco based startup Pullstring that enables the design and publishing of voice apps, according to a latest report. This purchase could help Apple's Siri compete better with Alexa.  Pullstring was founded in 2011 by a group of former Pixar executives and was originally used to power interactive voice apps for toys. Later on, it broadened its approach with the introduction of IoT products like Amazon Echo and Google Assistant. The company raised around $44 million in venture capital, from firms like CRV, Greylock, True Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and First Round Capital. According to PitchBook, the company's most recent post-money valuation was just around $160 million. Apple's upfront deal value is said to be around $30 million, plus around $10 million in potential earn-outs for management, this would also include CEO Oren Jacob, who once served as Pixar's CTO. Digital Assistant is seen as one of the next big things which Apple is lagging behind when compared to both Google and Amazon in terms of adoption and being open to developers. Apple did not comment on the acquisition.
