Google gives up on Android Things as IoT platform, will be limited to smart speakers, smart displays
Google, given the success it has seen with the Android Things and its partners in terms of smart speakers, smart displays, is now refocusing Android Things as a platform for OEM partners to build devices in those categories moving forward. For this reason, Google said that the support for production System on Modules (SoMs) based on NXP, Qualcomm, and MediaTek hardware will not be made available through the public developer platform at this time. Android Things, will, however, continue to be a platform for experimenting with and building smart, connected devices using the Android Things SDK on top of popular hardware like the NXP i.MX7D and Raspberry Pi 3B. System images for these boards will remain available through the Android Things console where developers can create new builds and push app updates for up to 100 devices for non-commercial use. Google says that it remains dedicated to providing a managed platform for IoT devices, including turnkey hardware solutions. As for the developers looking to commercialize IoT products in 2019, they can check out the Cloud IoT Core for secure device connectivity at scale and the upcoming Cloud IoT Edge runtime for a suite of managed edge computing services. As per an official announcement, Redmi Note 5 Pro is expected to get Android 9.0 (Pie) in Q1 2019 but the public beta testing for the MIUI Global ROM hasn’t started yet. Earlier, we tried Resurrection Remix, Oxygen OS 9.0 Port, Pixel Experience and Pixel Experience Extended ROM on Redmi Note 5 Pro, all of which were based on Android Pie. Developers have ported Android One ROM to Redmi Note 5 Pro from Mi A2, we tried it on our unit and here are our impressions, Performance and Benchmarks: Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 is still being used in a midrange as even now it's decent midrange SoC, we obtained AnTuTu score of 120860 which is highest that we saw on any custom ROM on Redmi Note 5 Pro we tested. It's not just the Antutu score, but we also experienced a smooth and reliable day to day performance and phone didn’t have any problem in handling multitasking. Instagram is said to be internally testing a web version of Instagram Direct messaging that lets users to chat with others without the app. When this feature rolls out, the Direct message will be available on the desktop, Android, iOS and the mobile web browser. In the current design state, Direct on the web is available from a Direct arrow icon in the top right of the screen. The feature looks like it will use an Instagram.com/direct/…. URL structure. if Instagram Direct gets popular, Facebook could pull it out of Instagram and give its own ...

India antitrust watchdog said to be investigating Google over Android abuse
According to a new Reuters report, India's antitrust commission is looking into accusations that Google is abusing its popular Android OS to block its rivals. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the six months has been reviewing a case similar to one Google faced in Europe. The European Commission found that Google had abused its market dominance since 2011 with practices such as forcing manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and its Chrome browser, together with its Google Play app store on Android devices. As for the CCI investigation, sources say, “It is on the lines of the EU case but at a preliminary stage.” This is the first time the watchdog's inquiry into allegations against Google over its Android platform is being reported. Google executives in recent months have met Indian antitrust officials at least once to discuss the complaint, which was filed by a group of individuals. The Indian watchdog could ask its investigations unit to further investigate the accusations against Google, or throw out the complaint if it lacks merit. Back in October 2018, Google said it would charge smartphone makers a fee for using its popular Google Play app store and would also allow them to use rival versions of Android to ...
