Google Android Q might block background clipboard reads, bring support for downgrading apps, new fonts, icon shapes and more
It is well known that Android can read your clipboard even if you don't grant them runtime permission to do so. The reason why Android apps need to read the clipboard is that they can’t accept any text from the clipboard without it, meaning you can’t paste any text that you’ve copied. However, Google might be planning on changing this with Android Q. New permission has been added which will limit what apps can read the clipboard in the background. The protection level of this permission is “signature,” meaning only apps signed by the OEM can be granted this permission. Reverting back to older version of apps needed root and Google doesn't support it traditionally as it breaks the app. However, with Android Q, Google might change that and would allow users to rollback apps to an older version. There were numerous permissions and commands that were found in Android Q that suggest it might be possible. First, the new and permissions suggest that the pre-installed market app can act as an agent to manage the rollback of application versions. The former permission is “signature” while the latter is “installer” on top of “signature,” so this means only a platform-signed app with the ...

LG, KAIST teamup for development of 6G mobile communication technology
While the development of 5G is still underway, South Korean giant LG has taken early steps to secure core technologies for 6G mobile communication. The company teamed up with KAIST which is state science school. LG has opened a 6G research lab at the state-run Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) in the central city of Daejeon. The South Korean mobile carriers started servicing limited 5G mobile communication in December last year to connect smart factories and other businesses which require fast network speed. Commercial service for smartphone users is set to begin in March. While the development of 5G is still on-going, 6G is still seen as an illusion and researchers at the University of Oulu estimate the future-generation mobile network can transfer terabits per second. Park Il-pyung, LG's chief technology officer said: With the establishment of the 6G research center, we will strengthen the research of next-generation mobile communication technology so that we can lead global standardization and secure an opportunity to create new businesses. Cho Dong-ho, a KAIST electrical engineering professor who will head LG's research lab said: It is meaningful to start the development of 6G mobile communication technology ahead of others. Source
Android Q UI reveals native support for facial recognition, screen-recording, WPA3 and more
Android Q which leaked earlier this month is confirmed to bring tons of new features including a system-wide dark theme and API changes. However, one of the biggest additions to the upcoming Android OS is the native support for a more secure facial recognition, instead of just relying on an image as a Trusted Face. Samsung, OnePlus, Huawei have had their own implementation of face unlock solutions, but Google with Android Q is preparing for the next wave of Android flagships to include support for these sensors natively. Users will interface with a “biometric_dialog” that Android 9 Pie began to build out for fingerprint unlock. The user experience should be rather straightforward with a “face_dialog” guiding users through the identification process. Google with Android Pie has improved screenshots, it added a new shortcut in the power menu alongside Power off and Restart menu. Android Q is now said to bring system-level screen recording that will be similar to existing third-party solutions. Users will need to grant the necessary permissions to the screen recorder. An “Ongoing notification” will be present throughout the capture with options to Start/Stop and Share once complete. Users will also have the ability to record an accompanying voiceover. With Pie being Android 9.0, it ...
Samsung Electronics to replace plastic packaging with sustainable materials
Samsung Electronics has announced that the company would soon start taking steps to replace plastic packaging materials with paper and other environmentally sustainable elements. From the first half of 2019, the packaging used currently for Samsung’s products and accessories – ranging from mobile phones and tablets to home appliances – will be substituted with environmentally sustainable materials like recycled/bio-based plastics and paper. To do this, Samsung Electronics has formed a task force involving design and development, purchasing, marketing and quality control for innovative packaging ideas. For mobile phone, tablet and wearable products, Samsung will replace the plastic used for holder trays with pulp molds, and bags wrapping accessories with eco-friendly materials. Samsung will also alter the phone charger design, swapping the glossy exterior with a matte finish and eliminating plastic protection films, thus reducing the use of plastics. The plastic bags used to protect the surface of home appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines, as well as other kitchen appliances, will also be replaced with bags containing recycled materials and bioplastics, which are respectively made from plastic wastes and non-fossil fuel materials like starch or sugar cane. Regarding paper, Samsung will only use fiber materials certified by global environmental organizations like ...
