Cortana won’t challenge Alexa and Google Assistant, says Microsoft CEO

It's no secret that Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant has fallen behind Google Assistant and Alexa, and it looks like Microsoft is taking a different route. The company's CEO Satya Nadella revealed that Microsoft no longer sees Cortana as a competitor to Alexa or Google Assistant. “Cortana needs to be that skill for anybody who’s a Microsoft 365 subscriber,” explains Nadella. Nadella is referencing the Microsoft's new consumer subscription push. “You should be able to use it on Google Assistant, you should be able to use it on Alexa, just like how you use our apps on Android and iOS so that’s at least how we want to think about where it’ll go.” The company has already partnered with Amazon to enable Cortana and Alexa integration and at the launch of the partnership, Nadella compared digital assistants to web browsers that need to be interoperable and access similar information. From this, it is clear that the company sees Cortana as an app/service that will work across multiple platforms. Microsoft moved Cortana out of its AI research division and into its Experiences and Devices team late last year. Microsoft has made Skype calling available on Alexa, and the Xbox One also now supports Alexa. Microsoft is now in the middle of re-positioning ...

Spotify to launch in India on January 31st reveals terms on official website

Spotify India launch was long coming; while there were many rumors and reports in the past, nothing materialized yet. However, things are happening faster than expected and latest we hear is that the company is on the verge of bringing their service to India. The launch is scheduled to take place as soon as January 31st.  The company's Terms and Conditions page on their website lists the effective inclusion of India which will become effective as of January 31, 2019. This is surely a surprise launch from Spotify. The company has recently signed a content deal with T-Series to bring Indian content to the platform, which was our first clue. However, launching the service doesn't mean success. Spotify will face stiff competition from home-grown platforms like Saavn, Gaana, Amazon's Prime Music among others. Apart from T-Series, Spotify is yet to sign deals with Sony and Warner Music for full-blown content availability in India, so if Spotify is dead serious about January 31st launch, things should happen fast. As of this moment, we only believe January 31st as the possible launch since the company didn't officially announce the same. No other details such as pricing, availability are known. India is a price sensitive market, ...

Collection 1 breach exposed over 770 million unique email IDs and over 21 million passwords

As many as 772,904,991 unique email addresses and over 21 million unique passwords have been leaked online. This results in more than 87GB of passwords and emails getting leaked. All these had been distributed in a folder dubbed ‘Collection # 1’ by hackers who have posted the link to the dump on a hacking forum.  What's more surprising is that the cache of emails and passwords appear to have been built up from numerous data breaches dating back to 2008. The data breach set was first reported by security researcher Troy Hunt who also runs the 'haveibeenpwned' website which lets you confirm if your email address or password have been compromised. The Collection #1 is over 87GB worth of data and contains over 12,000 separate files. The data leak was posted on the cloud-based sharing website, Mega and this data seems to have been taken down since. The way logins on most websites work, they don't store password, instead, what they store is a "hash" of your password, which emerges after a complex mathematical calculation that spits out a long string of numbers and letters instead. Meaning, the next time you log in using the same credentials on the website and type in the ...

ZTE and China Unicom complete world’s first 5G call on prototype smartphone

ZTE Corporation has announced that Guangdong branch of China Unicom and ZTE have made the world’s first 5G call by means of ZTE’s 5G prototype smartphone in Shenzhen 5G field trial. The test also completed the verification of diverse services, such as Wechat group voice call, online video, and web browsing. This makes the Shenzhen field of China Unicom the world's first commercial test field to make the first call in the NSA mode and it is in compliance with the 3GPP Rel-15. Shenzhen is one of the first 5G pilot cities of China Unicom and is fully verifying the 5G network equipment’s networking capabilities, special services, roaming and interconnection, and the inheritance of existing services in phases. The test adopts ZTE’s 5G end-to-end solution, including a radio access network, core network, transport network, and intelligent device, realizing the connection with ZTE’s 5G prototype smartphone in the field environment. The test has also verified several 5G key technologies such as Massive MIMO, 5G NR, NSA dual connectivity, FlexE transport technology, and 5G Common Core.
