Google acquires Fossil Group’s smartwatch technology for $40 million

Google has acquired Fossil Group's intellectual property related to a smartwatch technology that is currently under development for $40 million. The deal, which will see some of Fossil’s R&D team joining Google and will also result in the launch of a 'new product' that is yet to hit the market.  According to Greg McKelvey, EVP and chief strategy and digital officer of the Fossil Group, this deal is seen as a transaction, rather than an acquisition. He explained that this new product line is based on technology that the Fossil Group has evolved on top of the Misfit acquisition. Fossil bought Misfit for a reported $260 million back in 2015. The transaction is expected to be finalized this month. However, both the companies wouldn't reveal when exactly they're likely to see products from the deal emerge. McKelvey did reveal that Fossil plans on launching multiple devices across its brands based on the new tech. Vivo APEX 2019 bezel-less curved screen smartphone to be introduced on January 24

Vivo introduced its APEX FullView Concept Smartphone with 98% screen-to-body ratio and an in-display fingerprint scanner at the MWC in February last year. Later it introduced the phone as NEX and the new NEX Dual Screen with a new design was unveiled last month. Today the company posted a teaser for APEX 2019 bezel-less smartphone ahead of announcement on January 24th. This shows a more curved design without the front camera or even the buttons on the sides. In a teaser on Facebook earlier this week, the company posted an image with a caption 'Natural Perfection'. Recent renders of the phone codenmaed "The Waterdrop" revealed a curved design without any notches, bezels, or physical buttons. This is expected to feature gesture navigation and pressure-based integration. It is also expected to feature large and improved in-display fingerprint scanner , similar to what OPPO and Xiaomi showcased earlier this week. LG G7 ThinQ Android Pie update rolling out starting from Korea, update schedule for V35 ThinQ, V40 ThinQ, V30, G6 and more confirmed

LG has finally rolled out  Android 9.0 (Pie) update for its G7 ThinQ smartphone starting from Korea, as it had promised last month. The company has also shared update schedule for older smartphones, including some of the Q and X series smartphones in Korea, which extends throughout the year. Hope we can expect the global roll out soon after the roll out in Korea. Reliance Jio reports Rs. 831 crore profit in FY Q3 2018-19, crosses 10000 crore quarterly operating revenue

Reliance Jio has reported Rs. 10,383 crore revenue, up 12.4% QoQ and 50.9 YoY and a net profit of 831 crore, up 22.1% QoQ and 65% YoY for its sixth quarterly financial performance for the period that ended 31sh December, 2018.  Jio reported Standalone earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of 4,053 crore, up 13.4% QoQ, EBITDA margin of 39%, and Standalone earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of 2,369 crore, up 16% QoQ . Consolidated value of services stood at 12,252 crore, up 12.4% over trailing quarter. It has 280.1 million subscribers as of December 31st compared to 252.3 million at the end of September quarter. Average revenue per user (ARPU) during the quarter – ₹130 per subscriber per month Total wireless data traffic – 864 crore GB Average voice traffic – 63,406 crore minutes per day and 794 minutes per user per month Video consumption per subscriber per month – 460 crore hours Average data consumption per user per month - 10.8 GB Jio started offering JioGigaFiber services starting 15th August 2018, and the company said that it has witnessed overwhelming customer interest across 1,400 cities. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro expected to be powered by Snapdragon 675

At the Redmi Note 7 launch event last week Xiaomi confirmed that it will launch the Redmi Note 7 Pro soon with Sony IMX586 sensor replacing the Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor on the Redmi Note 7. The smartphone is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 675, according to new reports from China. The Redmi Note 7 uses Snapdragon 660. New SoC and camera sensor might bump up the price of the smartphone slightly. Xiaomi at the at 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong already confirmed that it will launch a new smartphone with Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform based on 11nm process technology, 2 performance (based on new Cortex A76) cores and 6 effciency cores (based on Cortex A55) as well as enhanced AI Engine, Spectra 250 ISP,  Kryo 460 CPUs and Adreno 612 GPU. Upcoming Meizu Note 9 processor will be equipped by the same SoC. Regarding other specifications of the Redmi Note 7 Pro most specs, including a 6.3-inch Full HD+ waterdrop notch display with 1.95mm narrow bezels, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a 4000mAh battery with support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 are expected to remain the same. Xiaomi schedules MWC 2019 event on February 24, Mi MIX 3 5G expected

Xiaomi did not introduce anything at the CES earlier this month, but the company has announced an event at the MWC on February 24th next month. It did not say what it will unveil the event, but we can expect the Mi MIX 3 5G that was teased at the Mi MIX 3 event back in October last year. It also said that the 5G version will launch in Q1 2019 and it has on display in Qualcomm booth at CES. The 5G verion of the Mi MIX 3 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem. Qualcomm at the CES said that its 5G modem will power more than 30 devices in 2019. Samsung is expected to introduce Galaxy S10 X 5G ahead of MWC at its Galaxy Unpacked event on February 20th, but can expect several companies to introduce 5G devices at the world's largest mobile showcase next month. Xiaomi is also expected to demo it next-generation in-display fingerprint scanner at the event and it will likely showcase its latest products including the latest Redmi Note 7 in the booth. Xiaomi showcases bigger in-display fingerprint scanner with one-click unlocking

Last year Xiaomi introduced Mi 8 Explorer Edition and later in the year it introduced Mi 8 Pro with pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint sensor that is 29% faster. This week President Lin Bin shared the next-generation in-display fingerprint on a Mi 8 test unit. He said that the company has worked for more than half an year to bring one-click unlocking and a larger unlocking area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o123KeVXYfo One-click unlocking lets you unlock the phone immediately when you place the phone on the screen without having to place your finger for few seconds. This also increases the fingerprint unlocking area to 25mm x 50.2mm, which is 15 times larger than the area on the Mi 8. This lets you unlock the phone without looking at the screen says the company. Xiaomi president said that the new fingerprint sensor will be introduced in a future product, so we can expect it in the Mi 8 that is expected to arrive in Q3 this year. Paytm launches Food Ordering in partnership with Zomato

Paytm has launched food ordering and delivery service through its mobile app in partership with Zomato. This lets you browse your favorite restaurants within the Paytm App and order food instantly. This service is currently live for Delhi-NCR and the company says that it will cover more than 80 thousand restaurants across 100 cities by end of this month. Paytm said that its QR is widely accepted across a wide range of outlets including quick-service restaurants to fine dining and casual dining options. "This association would further strengthen Paytm’s drive of enabling seamless mobile payments for purchasing food both online & offline," it added. Zomato covers more than 80 thousand restaurants across 100 cities. It achieved a monthly order run rate of 28 million in December 2018 and has a last mile delivery fleet of 1.5 lac partners across India. Paytm Food ordering is available for customers on the Paytm Android app and will soon be made available across India and on the Paytm iOS app as well.
