Xiaomi’s dual-side foldable smartphone surfaces in video, could be showcased next week
[caption id="attachment_272103" align="aligncenter" width="574"] Screen grab from @evleaks video[/caption] We already know that Samsung is working on its foldable phone, and it was also showcased officially back in November last year. Out of nowhere, now a new video of a foldable smartphone from Xiaomi has surfaced, thanks to @evleaks. It can be folded both the sides, turning the huge tablet-like screen to a small phone-like formfactor. If this is real, this should be the world's first dual-side foldable phone. Can't speak to the authenticity of this video or device, but it's allegedly made by Xiaomi, I'm told. Hot new phone, or gadget porn deepfake? pic.twitter.com/qwFogWiE2F — Evan Blass (@evleaks) January 3, 2019 It runs MIUI 10, and the UI adapts to the screen size quickly. According to rumors from China, the phone might be teased at its Redmi event on January 10th as a surprise, while the official announcement and availability might take time. We should know more details about the foldable phone from Xiaomi soon. Source
Huawei patent hints at penta rear cameras for the Mate 30 Pro
Huawei is said to be working on a smartphone with Penta rear camera setup, according to the case design. The company last year introduced smartphones with triple rear camera setup. The company now has applied for a number of design patents at the Chinese CNIPA on 27 June 2018 and the patents were published on 1 January 2019. The company usually files for smartphone designs, but this time it is cases. One of these cases stood out from the pack as it comes with an interesting opening at the rear, larger than that of the Mate 20 Pro. Based on the design and the shape of the opening, the smartphone, there is a possibility that it might come with Penta rear cameras and LED flash. As you would expect, no details regarding the camera or the smartphone itself are nowhere mentioned in the patent file. But putting the patented case and Mate20 Pro design aside, one could easily identify the difference and it is quite obvious that a smartphone with more sensors is in the making, so this could be Mate 30 Pro. Meanwhile, HMD Global's Nokia is also rumored to working on Nokia 9 flagship with Penta cameras on the back. Via

LG patents hint at a smartwatch with built-in camera
WIPO and USPTO published a patent of an LG smartwatch and method for controlling same on December 20, 2018. The patent hints at a smartwatch with a camera in the watch band. It is necessary to move the camera to get a clean photograph which is easy with a smartphone, but it's a bit difficult on a wrist. For this exact reason, the camera is configured in such a way that it can be photographed in the direction of the object. The watch band can slide into the watch case, causing the camera to move towards the watch case. Alternatively, the camera itself may move on the watch band or the camera may be implemented in a loose link that users can swap with another link. Additionally, LG may develop a clip that can easily be attached to the watchband. The patent also describes that LG's smartwatch can recognize faces. Once you make a picture of a person, the camera will be able to make a cut-out of the face. The camera can also be used to know more information about a product; meaning take a picture and give a long-press on the display and the watch will display information for the same. In addition, users can take a picture ...

Google gets FCC approval for new radar-based motion sensor
Google has won approval from U.S. regulators to deploy a radar-based motion sensing device known as Project Soli, said the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in an order. It has granted Google a waiver to operate the Soli sensors at higher power levels than currently allowed. The FCC said the sensors can also be operated aboard aircraft. The FCC said the decision “will serve the public interest by providing for innovative device control features using touchless hand gesture technology.” The FCC said the Soli sensor captures motion in a three-dimensional space using a radar beam to enable touchless control of functions or features that can benefit users with mobility or speech impairments. Google says the sensor can allow users to press an invisible button between the thumb and index fingers or a virtual dial that turns by rubbing a thumb against the index finger. Google in a video demonstration said that a user could operate a smartwatch, scroll through music or adjust the volume by simply motioning using the system. Google added that the radar signal could penetrate fabrics, enabling controls that could work in a pocket or a backpack. Even though these controls are virtual, the interactions feel physical and responsive as feedback is ...
