The combined AR and VR headset market grew 9.4% year over year in the Q3 2018, according to the IDC. The VR headset market returned to growth in Q3 2018 after four consecutive quarters of decline and now makes up 97% of the combined market. Global shipments for VR headsets reached 1.9 million units in the quarter, up 8.2% from Q3 2017. Samsung's Gear VR declined 58.6% as product discounts and availability have dried up. Apple patent hints at interchangeable ‘universal’ AirPods with biometrics and improved fit
A new Apple patent reveals potential features of the future AirPods and one of the most interesting parts of the filing involves interchangeable earbuds that are equipped with “at least one” biometric sensor, which could detect left/right ear placement and accordingly adjust audio, as reported earlier. Apple has long been in the pursuit of that perfect earbud that would fit all ears. The current three-part configuration of the current AirPods are environmentally responsible and relatively easy to manufacture, evolving AirPods from a separate left / right unit to a single component should lower costs and make getting a replacement AirPod much simpler. This patent filing comes just days after a new report from Kuo which said that the updated AirPods that are set to launch in the first quarter of 2019 will include wireless charging. It is clear the next AirPods refresh will mostly focus on improving upon the current design. But this patent shows that in 2020 and beyond, Apple is interested in creating an ultimate earbud that can fit anybody, with an array of biometric sensors capable of tracking health measurements along with detecting ear placement. The patent describes how biometric sensors need to be pressed firmly against the skin to work best, and foam ...

Samsung and Verizon demonstrate 5G data transmission using 400MHz of mmWave spectrum
Samsung, Qualcomm, and Verizon have announced a successful 5G New Radio (NR) data connection using 400MHz of bandwidth in the 28GHz spectrum, resulting in maximum throughput of more than 1.7 Gbps. The data connection demonstrated the delivery of multi-gigabit 5G speeds to a smartphone form-factor mobile test device. The test used Samsung’s commercial 5G NR and 4G LTE equipment to deliver the 5G NR data transmission using Verizon’s 28 GHz spectrum. This spotlights a rapid, stable and effective path to commercial 5G service using a Non-Standalone mode of operation with dual-connectivity that takes advantage of both 5G and LTE technology. The data throughput of more than 1.7 Gbps was delivered to a Qualcomm Technologies’ smartphone form factor test device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end, and antenna elements. The testing took place in Qualcomm Technologies’ San Diego, CA-based labs. This 5G NR demonstration follows a recent announcement from Verizon about the company's successful first data transmission on a 5G-upgradeable smartphone using a commercial 5G network in Providence, RI. That transmission used Samsung’s 5G NR solutions and the Snapdragon X50 5G modem, along with QualcommQTM052 mmWave antenna modules.
