Apple iPhone XR lifecycle shipment estimates down by 30 Million: Kuo

In the latest research note, Ming-Chi Kuo has cut his shipping estimates for the iPhone XR due to several factors. This might the result of the higher demand for the iPhone XS and the older models. He is reducing his iPhone shipment forecasts by 15–20% for the first quarter of 2019. This news falls in line with reports of Apple canceling additional production of iPhone XR owing to poor reception. Kuo believes that iPhone shipments for the current quarter will be in the same 75–80 million range he previously predicted. However, he has lowered his first-quarter estimate to 47–52 million from a previous range of 55–60 million. Given that he has raised his early iPhone XR estimate a month ago and cited stronger demand seen for the iPhone 8 last year with the potential for more stable demand over time, this new estimate is surprising. This drop in estimation also comes owing to the competition from Huawei's Mate 20 series. Kuo has reduced the iPhone XR shipment estimations for Q4 2018, Q1 2019, and Q2 2019 by 30–35%, 25–30%, and 25–30% to 30–35, 20–25, and 10–15mn units, respectively. In the latest research note, Kuo said: We have reduced our iPhone XR shipment estimation from 100mn units to 70mn ...

Twitter planning on bringing edit button to fix typos in Tweets

Owing to the growing frustration for the lack of an edit button on Twitter, the company's CEO Jack Dorsey has shed some light on the company's plans to build an edit button for Tweets. Speaking at an event at IIT Delhi, India, he said that the company has to carefully consider the use cases for the edit button before making it a reality.  Jack further added that Twitter will ideally prevent unlimited editing so that no one can abuse the feature to alter their statements later on. Dorsey noted that the company wants to implement a solution that solves a problem and removes what “people see as friction in the service.” The company clarified that it has been considering this edit functionality for a while and is aiming to do it right. "We can’t make something which is distracting or takes anything away from the public record,” said the Twitter CEO. In 2016, Dorsey said that the company “has been thinking a lot” about an edit button for tweets, but nothing came to fruition. Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO said: You have to pay attention to what are the use cases for the edit button. A lot of people want the edit button because they want ...

Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 DNS service app now available for Android and iOS

Back in April this year, Cloudflare announced 1.1.1.1; the privacy-first consumer DNS service that is said to speed up your internet connection and help keep it private. The company now is launching 1.1.1.1 mobile app to make it easy to use 1.1.1.1 on your phone. Anyone can use the DNS resolver and the company claims it to be “the Internet’s fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service." DNS is an essential part of the internet and it is typically offered by internet service providers to resolve domain names into a real IP address that routers and switches understand. Since the DNS servers provided by ISPs are often slow and use the DNS servers to identify all sites that are visited, there is often scope for privacy concerns. While Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 has already seen an incredible number of switches, the company says that people are not able to make those changes, particularly on mobile devices. Cloudflare says that it has worked with APNIC to offer its DNS service through 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Cloudflare’s DNS offers both DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS. After being in public beta since last month, the app is now available for everyone and makes your Internet faster and more private. The company says that millions of websites rely on Cloudflare for performance and security. By ...

Gboard for Android uses AI to suggest GIFs, emoji, and stickers during conversation

Google has announced that starting today, Gboard will use AI to suggest GIFs, emoji, and stickers to you related to your conversation. This makes it easier and faster to share and communicate your feelings while having a conversation. The app will have a “GIF” icon that will appear in the top left corner of Gboard. Tap it, and you’ll see a selection of GIFs, emoji and stickers that Gboard thinks you might want to share. If you’re typing “Awesome!” Gboard will suggest this sticker. To make sure these suggestions are private to you and take place as fast as possible, this feature is processed entirely on your device. This feature is initially available globally for Gboard for Android in English only. Over time, it will be expanded to Gboard suggestions to more languages, and more types of content to help you do and say more right from your conversation. Source

Intel XMM 8160 5G modem with 6Gbps speed, sub 6GHz 5G NR support announced

Intel has finally announced the XMM 8160 5G modem that is aimed at providing 5G connectivity to phones, PCs and broadband access gateways. The XMM 8160 5G will support peak speeds up to 6 gigabits per second, making it three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems. The company confirmed that it will be available in the second half of 2019. The Intel XMM 8160 is a multimode modem, meaning it will support the new standard for 5G New Radio (NR), including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, as well as 4G, 3G and 2G legacy radios in a single chipset. With single-chip multimode baseband capability, the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will enable device manufacturers to design smaller and more power-efficient devices. Since it is advancing directly to a multimode solution, Intel will offer very clear improvements in power, size, and scalability. Intel’s integrated multimode solution supports simultaneous connectivity (EN-DC) for LTE and 5G – critical as 5G mobile network devices must be backward compatible to 4G if 5G is not available at any moment or at any location. The modem offers support for new millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum as well as sub 6GHz 5G NR support and download speeds up ...
