Google Chrome 70 brings Web Authentication API, PWAs on Windows, AV1 decoder and more

Google has rolled out the Chrome 70 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. This update brings an option to disable linking Google site and Chrome sign-ins, Progressive Web Apps on Windows, the ability for users to restrict extensions’ access to a custom list of sites, an AV1 decoder, and much more. Google with Chrome 69, tried to “simplify” how it handles Google site sign-ins by also signing you into Chrome with the same account. If you sign out, whether from Chrome or from any Google site, you’re signed out of both. This led to a massive outcry from Chrome users and this Chrome 70 is making some changes including an option that allows users to turn off linking web-based sign-in with browser-based sign-in. If you disable this feature, signing into a Google site will not sign you into Chrome. An update to the user interfaces to better communicate a user’s sync state and instead of keeping the Google auth cookies to allow you to stay signed in after cookies are cleared, the browser will once again delete all cookies. While these are certainly an improvement, it still doesn't solve the automatic sign-in concern. The Chrome 70 now supports Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) on Windows. These apps can launch from the ...

Google Pixel 3 XL teardown reveals Samsung’s OLED display

Following the tradition, iFixit has performed a teardown of the Pixel 3 XL giving some insight into the phone's hardware. Interestingly, it is found that the Pixel 3 XL is using an OLED panel from Samsung. iFixit also mentioned that it is fairly difficult to open the Pixel 3 XL, due to copious amounts of foam adhesive. Internal components of the Pixel 3 XL include 4GB of LPDDR4X DRAM from Micron, 64GB of Skhynix flash storage, the Pixel Visual Core, the Google Titan M security chip, and a Qi wireless charging receiver from IDT. Other components from Qualcomm, including the main Snapdragon 845 processor, radios, and an audio codec chip. Following the epic backslash from last year's Pixel 2 XL display, Google seems to be playing safe by going with Samsung panel despite investing in LG display. However, replacing a Pixel 3 screen will be tricky, and will most likely require replacing the whole frame of the phone. iFixit says that the vibration motor on the Pixel 3 XL is said to be improved from last year, capable of providing more precise haptic feedback.  The Pixel 2 XL rear glass covered 20% of the phone, while it is 100% crackable on the Pixel 3 ...

Facebook said to be working on camera-equipped TV device

Facebook is said to be building a camera-equipped gadget that sits atop a TV and allows video calling along with entertainment services like Facebook’s YouTube competitor, according to a report. The project is internally codenamed "Ripley" and uses the same core technology as the company's recently announced 'Portal' device.  Facebook is said also said to be planning on introducing the project Ripley in the first half of 2019. Since the device is still in development, the date could be changed. The announcement of Portal was postponed owing to privacy concerns. The so-called device will also give Facebook a chance to compete with the likes of Apple, Roku, and Amazon. Facebook’s own Watch video service is included with Portal, and the company has said that it intends to add more streaming services over time. Portal and project Ripley represent Facebook’s widening ambition to build a consumer hardware business besides its virtual reality brand Oculus. If you remember, Facebook, almost two-years ago formed a skunkworks hardware group called Building 8 that is dedicated to developing so-called “moonshot” products. Two unreleased products the group teased publically last year include a device that can read brainwaves to determine what words someone wants to type and an armband that is ...
