Apple Watch Series 4 shipments surpass expectations; iPhone XS poses lackluster demand: Kuo

Apple last week introduced the Watch Series 4 and the new iPhones and thanks to the new innovative features like ECG support, Apple Watch Series 4 is seemingly becoming popular, according to Kuo. He predicts Apple Watch shipments will reach 18 million units in 2018, of which the Watch Series 4 said to account for 50-55%.  If ECG support is expanded to more countries, the Series 4 Watch could see even stronger shipment momentum. However, the iPhone XS pre-orders are "lower-than-expected," since customers are opting for the iPhone XS Max or wait for the iPhone XR. The iPhone XS orders will account for only 10-15% shipments of the new 2018 iPhones, down from 15 to 20%, according to Kuo. Given the lower price tag and dual SIM support in China, the iPhone XR looks positive. It will be available to pre-order from October 19th. The iPhone XR shipments increased from an early forecast; up from 50 to 55 percent previously. The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and Apple Watch Series 4 pre-orders will begin from September 21st. Kuo in a statement said: There is strong Chinese demand thanks to the gold casing, dual-SIM, and large display. The XS Max average shipping time is shorter ...

Samsung said to be working on Galaxy A series phone with Snapdragon 845, edge-to-edge display

Samsung is reportedly working on a smartphone; the Galaxy A that might be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. The company recently confirmed that it will be launching a smartphone with four rear cameras. It is also possible that Samsung could price the phone slightly lesser than its current flagships.  However, details about the so-called smartphone are scarce at the moment but our educated guess suggests an 18.5:9 tall SUPER AMOLED display with reduced top and bottom bezels, improved dual-rear cameras. Moving on, the high-end processor might be accompanied with 4/6GB RAM with 64/128GB storage options. It is also possible that the phone might run on Android 9.0 Pie, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Android 8.1 Oreo come pre-installed. At this moment, it is unclear when Samsung is aiming to launch or introduce the Galaxy A series phone with Snapdragon 845 since rumors also suggest a slim down variant of Galaxy A with Snapdragon 710. So, it is better to wait until we hear more details come our way. The company recently sent out invites for the launch of the new Galaxy smartphone which is said to pack four rear cameras. Source

Samsung Galaxy Note8 update brings AR Emoji and super slow-motion

Samsung Galaxy Note8 is  getting a new update bringing new features including AR Emoji and super slow-motion. However, the update is rolling out in phases across the globe currently. The firmware version of the update is N950FXXU5CRHA and mentions AR Emoji and Super Slow-Motion camera functions have been added to the device. Furthermore, the update also brings the September month security patch as well. Since the AR Emoji and super slow-motion don’t entirely rely on specialized hardware, they are not limited to the S9 or the Galaxy Note9. The AR Emoji lets users create a digital faces of themselves mapped with their voice and facial movements. It also lets you create a set of animated stickers which can be used in third-party messaging apps as well. As for the Slo-mo, it allows users to record slow-motion videos. The feature on the Galaxy S9 allows users to record 0.2s of video at 960fps in 720p resolution and 0.4s at 480fps in 720p in manual mode. But it is unclear at the moment if the Galaxy Note8 gets the same recording capabilities. The update is rolled out starting from France and we expect it to be rolled out to other markets across the globe. Source | Via

Google’s Now Playing tech powers Sound Search in Google Assistant

Google last year introduced a new 'Now Playing' feature with Pixel 2. This uses deep neural networks to bring low-power, always-on music recognition to mobile devices. Google recently introduced a new version of the Sound Search that is powered by the same technology as Now Playing.  Google also announced that you can use it through the Google Search app or the Google Assistant on any Android phone. Thanks to the latest version of Sound Search, Google says that you’ll get faster, more accurate results than ever before. Google developed an entirely new system using convolutional neural networks to turn a few seconds of audio into a unique “fingerprint without any noticeable battery impact. The server-side Sound Search system is very different, having to match against nearly 1000x as many songs as Now Playing and this makes Sound Search both faster and more accurate with a substantially larger musical library presented several unique challenges. Now Playing generates the musical “fingerprint” by projecting the musical features of an eight-second portion of audio into a sequence of low-dimensional embedding spaces consisting of seven two-second clips at 1-second intervals. In the initial phase, the algorithm finds good candidates by leveraging more neural networks and in the second matching phase, a detailed ...

DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung’s mobile division, confirmed that the Galaxy S10 design changes will be “very significant.” However, Koh didn’t go into the specifics of these changes and might be referring to the overall design of the flagship compared to the S9. It might also feature triple-rear cameras in the high-end variant and that right there is a new design element to the Galaxy S series. Furthermore, Koh also mentioned that the Galaxy S10  will be available in “amazing” colors so it's possible that the company might be working on new color options for the Galaxy S10. There’s also a possibility that Samsung introduces new gradient and emerald green color options with its next flagship. According to rumors, the Galaxy S10 and the S10 Plus said to come in three variants; 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.4-inch models and pack a ...
