Qualcomm introduces world-first 5G mmWave and sub-6GHz smartphone modules

Qualcomm today introduced the world’s first fully-integrated 5G NR millimeter wave (mmWave); QTM052 mmWave and QPM56xx sub-6 GHz RF modules for smartphones and other mobile devices. These modules pair with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 5G modem to deliver modem-to-antenna capabilities across several spectrum bands.  Qualcomm says that to date, mmWave signals have not been used for mobile wireless communications due to the many technical and design challenges they pose. However, the QTM052 mmWave antenna modules work in tandem with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem. They support advanced beam forming, beam steering, and beam tracking technologies, drastically improving the range and reliability of mmWave signals. It features an integrated 5G NR radio transceiver, power management IC, RF front-end components and phased antenna array and support up to 800 MHz of bandwidth in the 26.5-29.5 GHz (n257), as well as the entire 27.5-28.35 GHz (n261) and 37-40 GHz (n260) mmWave bands. The QPM56xx RF module family (including the QPM5650, QPM5651, QDM5650, and QDM5652) is designed to allow smartphones based on the Snapdragon X50 5G modem to support 5G NR in sub-6 GHz RF bands. The QPM5650 and QPM5651 feature integrated 5G NR PA/LNA/Switch and filtering subsystem, while the QDM5650 and QDM5652 feature integrated 5G NR LNA/switch and filtering subsystem for diversity and MIMO support. Sony IMX586 world’s highest resolution 48MP smartphone camera sensor announced

Sony just announced IMX586, its latest stacked CMOS image sensor for smartphones with highest pixel count in a smartphone and world-first ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8 μm, making it possible to pack 48 effective megapixels onto a 1/2-type (8.0 mm diagonal) unit. It uses  Quad Bayer color filter array, where the adjacent 2x2 pixels come in the same color, so that the sensor promises high sensitivity and high resolution. "In low light situations, such as shooting at night, the signal from the four adjacent pixels are added, raising the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 1.6 μm pixels (12 effective megapixels), to capture bright, low-noise photos and videos, and when shooting bright scenes such as daytime outdoors, the built-in, original signal processing function performs array conversion, making it possible to obtain high-definition 48 effective megapixel images in real time," said Sony. The original Sony exposure control technology and signal processing functionality are built into the image sensor, enabling real-time output and a superior dynamic range that is four times greater than conventional products. "Even scenes with both bright and dark areas can be captured with minimal highlight blowout or loss of detail in shadows while viewing the image on the smartphone display," added Sony. China’s BOE Display said to supply OLED displays to Apple

Apple currently relies on Samsung for the supply of OLED displays for the iPhone X. However, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, China seems to be pushing itself in becoming a supplier of OLED displays to Apple. This comes as a part of its efforts to increase advanced manufacturing.  Furthermore, the report claims that China's BOE Technology Group is seeking to supply Apple with OLED displays for future iPhone models. At present, BOE supplies displays for iPads and MacBooks and is also the largest supplier of large LCD screens. It is the only Chinese display company that supplies to Apple and is controlled by the Beijing city government. This change has another advantage as it helps Apple in staying on good terms with the Chinese government. As for BOE, it is a win for China in its race to catch up with South Korea and Japan in advanced display-screen manufacturing. There reports about LG Display supplying 2 to 4 million OLED Panels for 6.5-inch Apple iPhone X Plus. The Wall Street Journal report says: Buying display screens from BOE, which is controlled by the Beijing city government and whose biggest shareholders are state-linked companies, could help Apple stay in China’s good graces—as long ...
