HTC demonstrates multi-room VR using Vive PRO and SteamVR 2.0

HTC is said to be working on multi-room VR using Steam as the company has shown off a SteamVR beta, a Vive Pro, and 16 base stations to allow VR between multiple rooms. The tester said to have wandered between rooms finding tracked objects through a complex but connected space. Here’s a video of the test environment that people asked for. Three separate tracked spaces, with two 2.0 BS each, all in a shared virtual space. (Seems to work even behind closed door) Trackers placed within the shared space to show common coordinate system between spaces. pic.twitter.com/efqJKajky6 — Alvin Wang Graylin (@AGraylin) July 11, 2018 However, you can't expect to play VR games that span your entire home, though, as there are limitations. According to Alan Yates, the SteamVR is still limited to tracking from four base stations in a given session. This more or less is about the support for "radio-based channel configuration tools" rather than a dramatic change in SteamVR's capabilities. As of now, you can't really buy the setup, instead, you need to buy a Vive Pro to get Steam VR 2.0 tracking stations, so there's no way to tell if HTC or any other company would release the stand-alone station packs in the near ...

Google app update hints at podcasts episode search, Google Lens intro text and more

Google has pushed a new beta update to its Google app and this update details how the last remnant of Google Now will soon be killed. It also hints at some minor tweaks to Podcasts and Lens. It features a “deprecation_warning” for a widget. "Feed" is most likely to be removed since how it is the last piece linked to Google Now. Instead of Feed, it will push 'At-a-glance widget' that features the date, weather, calendar and other information. Moving along, search in Google Podcasts is limited to a high lookup of shows currently. However, it might soon get the ability to surface individual episodes when searching in the Podcasts app. It is also in line with Google’s ambition to transcribe every podcast and make them searchable. The Podcasts Settings features a new toolbar with Help, Privacy, and Terms links. The panel that describes Google Lens capabilities is also tweaked slightly; it includes categories and descriptions. “Places” is now  changed to “Identify Plants and Animals.” There is a new 'top apps' feature with rounded search bar and cards. There seems to be a sheet to edit Feed articles, the “spark” icon for topics is present. This was last seen on a Pixel launcher feed redesign that Google ...

Facebook hires Google’s head of chip development Shahriar Rabii

Facebook announced that it has hired Google's head of chip development Shahriar Rabii to be the vice president and its head of silicon. With this announcement, the company once again hinted that it is serious about building its own semiconductors, joining Apple Inc.  Shahriar Rabii previously helped Google in the development of chips for the company’s devices, including the Pixel smartphone’s custom Visual Core chip, according to his LinkedIn profile. According to the people familiar with the matter, Rabii will be working under Andrew Bosworth, the company’s head of virtual reality and augmented reality. To remind you, Facebook is said to be forming a team to design chips. It is working on semiconductors, which can be useful for a variety of different efforts including to process information for its vast data centers and its artificial intelligence work. this move from both Google and Facebook will reduce their dependence on Qualcomm and Intel. Apple already made the move and has been shipping its own custom main processors in iPads and iPhones since 2010. Facebook earlier this year launched the Oculus Go standalone virtual reality headset with a Qualcomm smartphone chip. It is already said to be working on a series of smart speakers with large touch screens that can also be ...

Huawei said to be embracing artificial intelligence beyond smartphones with Project Da Vinci

Huawei is said to be embracing artificial intelligence technologies beyond just smartphones and move it to a wide variety of product categories under the Project Da Vinci, which is an internal initiative. The project is said to be ranging from consumer electronics to telecom equipment. Though the primary focus will be the consumer electronics.  Furthermore, in terms of other applications, the company is reportedly planning to pose a challenge to NVIDIA’s data center chips with hardware of its own, while having its subsidiary HiSilicon developing new AI modules. With the company facing a tough time in the USA, thegovernment is unlikely to accept such hardware anytime soon, so it is evident that the company would not be targeting the stateside anytime soon. Instead, it will challenge NVIDIA in its home country since China currently accounts for nearly a quarter of the chipmaker’s revenue. The project also includes Huawei’s surveillance services and is directly related to camera feed analysis solutions the company is presently offering in some 90 countries across four continents. This initiative would play a large part in the company's wireless plans, inline with the fifth generation mobile networks. This also decreases its dependence on Qualcomm who it sees as its primary rival in terms of semi conductor business. Either way, ...
