Google Camera v5.3 hints at RAW support, corrections to wide-angle distortion, multi-channel audio and more

Android P Developer Preview 4 is out and it comes with smaller app updates, and Google Camera is one of them. However, it doesn't seem to have any live changes, it does have hints of many new features to come, including the much-anticipated RAW support, corrections to wide-angle distortion, multi-channel audio and more. The addition of RAW support was spotted lying underneath almost two full years ago in the Google Camera v3.2 teardown app version. But somehow the feature never made it to the final version. However, we are now back at it again and this time things are looking slightly more concrete. This time there is even a tutorial text that explains RAW saves as a DNG file and suggestions of using a suitable photo editor that understands the format, and that shooting in raw will consume more storage space. Google Camera is said to be gaining a new feature dubbed as a 'correction to wide-angle distortion.' This feature in Google's Camera app is very specific about fixing distortion on faces. However, it is still not clear if these fixes are achieved through some magical algorithm, or if it's sticking to the more conventional pixel-stretching approach. Google also seems to be adding a ...

HTC to slash 1500 jobs at its manufacturing unit in Taiwan

Smartphone maker HTC is planning on slashing around a quarter of its global workforce through job cuts at its manufacturing unit in Taiwan. This move is in a bid to better manage resources in its tough times. This also indicates that the company is struggling yet again as the market share decline amid mounting competition from Apple, Samsung, and Chinese rivals. The company said that it would cut around 1,500 jobs in its manufacturing unit in Taiwan. This represents about a quarter of the 6,450 staff it employed globally as of June. The layoffs will be completed by the end of September and is also a part of a broader plan to bring HTC’s smartphone and VR businesses under common leadership in each region. It is a known fact that Google bought stakes in HTC for around $1.1 billion where it shifted around 2,000 staff, this move also cast doubts over the Taiwanese firm’s longer-term future. The company reported a 55.5% plunge in April revenues year-on-year and a 46.7% decline in March sales. HTC in a statement said. Today HTC announces plan toust optimize the manufacturing organizations in Taiwan. This plan will allow more effective and flexible resource management going forward. Source

Apple A12 processor from 2018 iPhone with faster speeds, 4GB RAM surfaces in benchmarks

Apple's 2018 iPhones are expected to include a new 6-core A12 processor; A12 and much like with previous chipsets, the new is also expected to bring speed and efficiency improvements. If the benchmarks are to be believed, the A12 is said to be faster and more powerful than A11. The Geekbench listing reveals that the A12 chipset has scored a single-core score of 4673 and a multi-core score of 10912. In the same comparison, the A11 got a single core score of 4206 and a multi-core score of 10128, indicating the new A12 chip will be approximately 10 percent faster than the A11 chip when it comes to both multi-core and single-core performance. Compute scores of the 2018 iPhone features a Metal score of 21691. Compared to the iPhone X's Metal score of 15234, this is the result of GPU improvements. However, we are not sure which iPhone the company is using for the benchmarks, but Apple might be using the same A12 chipset on the three upcoming iPhones. The labeled iPhone is the "11,2," and it is running a version of iOS 12. The benchmark device reveals a 4GB RAM, this again falls in line with Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who suggested the two OLED ...

Apple 18W USB-C iPhone power adapter prototype surfaces

There were rumors that suggested Apple might be including an 18-watt USB-C charger and a Lightning to USB cable in the box in the upcoming 2018 iPhones. This will allow users to fast charge their iPhones without requiring to purchase separate charging accessories at additional cost.  The new surfaced live images showcase an engineering prototype of the actual U.S. version of the charger, although their legitimacy cannot be confirmed at this moment. Interestingly, the design of the charger is mostly in line with previous renderings. It features a compact body in the style of Apple's 5-watt charger that usually comes in the iPhone box. It comes with a USB-C port on the other end. Another interesting aspect is the somewhat different Apple's usual markings, but then again this may be due to its prototype nature. The model number on the charger is A1720, in line with Apple's numbering scheme, and it confirms the charger offers output up to 5V at 3A (15W) or 9V at 2A (18W). Apple is rumored to include the more powerful charger with its new iPhones launching in the latter part of this year but would make sense if it is included in the upcoming iPad models, which have traditionally included 10–12W adapters.
