Google today has announced the release of Android Things 1.0 after launching it to the developers at the end of 2016. It is also announcing the  System-on-Modules (SoMs) based on the NXP i.MX8M, Qualcomm SDA212, Qualcomm SDA624, and MediaTek MT8516 hardware platforms. Google says that these modules are certified for production use with the guaranteed support of up to three years. Google also announced that it will offer free stability fixes and security patches for three years, with additional options for extended support. Even after the support period ends, developers can still continue to push app updates to devices. The Android Things console for the software update is limited to 100 active devices for non-commercial use. For developers who wish to launch a commercial product running Android Things must sign a distribution agreement with Google to remove the device limit. With 1.0 release, Android Things is getting a new interface to configure hardware peripherals, enabling build-time control of the Peripheral I/O connections available and device properties such as GPIO resistors and I2C bus speed. Amazon Alexa can now be used as default Assistant on Android

Android OS is known for its openness and freedom of choice, and today this freedom is going a step further as users can now set Amazon's Alexa as default assistant even over the Google Assistant following Microsoft's route where it bought in the ability to set Cortana as default assistant last year. However, there are some shortcomings; if you are a Pixel 2 user with a squeezable gesture to activate the Google Assistant, it won't work with Alexa. So, you will have to long-press your hardware or software home button to trigger Alexa. To set Alexa as your default Assistant, head over to the Settings -> Apps & notifications -> Default apps -> Assist & voice input and select "Amazon Alexa" as your new default. Once you set Alexa as default, once you long-pressing the hardware or software home navigation button, it will now bring Alexa with a listening dialog pretty much how as you'd expect. Reverting back to the Assistant is simple, undo the settings from above. You can download the Amazon Alexa app from Play Store here. Via

Instagram Stories could get ‘Music Stickers’ and auto-song detection

Instagram said to be working on bringing 'Music Stickers' and auto-song detection for Stories. The 'Music Stickers' found inside its Android app could let you search for and add a song to your posts and the company is also said to be working on detecting songs you’re listening to and display the artist and song title as just a visual label. Thanks to the multiple licensing deals stuck by Facebook with the major record labels recently, these Listenable music stickers would make Instagram Stories even more addicted. This feature would definitely pose a threat to other similar services like Musically, and stumbling rival Snapchat that is also aiming to foray into music. It can also act as a powerful driver of music discovery. The Instagram's 'Search Music' feature is built-in and sits beside location and friend-mention sticker search options inside Instagram Stories. Users can search 'music overlay stickers' using Genres,” “Moods,” and “Trending. However, the company could change this functionality before it is rolled out. But with Instagram rolling out features like Focus, Video calling, Nametags which were earlier spotted testing weighs some credibility to the new testing results. It is unclear how exactly this feature would work, but it looks like once user picked a song and added it as ...
