Google expands its presence in China, opens new office in Shenzhen
After announcing its plans to open its first AI lab in China last month, Google today has silently opened the 3rd office in Shenzhen in its latest expansion in China. Shenzhen city in China is known for being a global hardware hub, and the office isn't a fully functional campus. Instead, it is just space within a serviced office and will start this week. Google says that it has important clients and partners in Shenzhen and it is setting up space there to have better communication and workflow. It should be noted that Shenzhen is the home for the $500 billion firm Tencent and other mobile giants like Huawei and ZTE, Alibaba, and Baidu. Google currently has offices in Shanghai and Beijing in China. Shenzhen space will most likely be used by the team members that have spent a lot of time there. The office space in Shenzhen also reflects the Google's acquisition of a large chunk of HTC's business. Google in a statement has said: Hello China Googlers, I hope your 2018 is off to a great start! Google to expand Cloud infrastructure with 3 new undersea cables, 5 new regions
Alphabet's subsidiary brand Google Cloud has spent almost $30 billion to improve the infrastructure in the last three years. The company continues to overcome many technical difficulties using subsea cables, which is the new standard for the wired data transfer across the world. The story does not stop there, as the one of the leading cloud service provider has added three new submarine cables across fine new regions. The services in these new regions will go live from the first quarter of 2018 (in Netherlands and Montreal regions). The new submarine cables will be able to support up to 25 percent of the global internet traffic. Companies like PayPal will be able to get most out of these technologies to carry forward their businesses without any hiccups. The cloud service uses different technologies like Curie cable, Havfrue cable, and HK-G cable which happens to overcome the present-day challenges when it comes to large-quantity data transfers. These new technologies will make sure that the Google services used by the end users use the same technology, which results in better end-user experience. PayPal's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Sri Shivananda about the services offered by Google Cloud, said: At PayPal, we process billions of transactions ...
YouTube testing new dark mode on iOS mobile app
YouTube is now testing new 'Dark Mode' for its iOS mobile app. A screenshot with the new option in the setting page is being posted by a user on Reddit. The feature is already live for some and is enabled with YouTube app version number 13.01.4. Since it is in testing phase the feature seems to be limited to a handful of users, meaning that despite updating the app to V13.01.4, the feature is not enabled for most users. This is a server-side activation done by YouTube. Even the App Store description for the version number 13.01.4 has no mention of the dark mode. With iOS being the first platform to get the Dark Mode, we expect the feature would be available to Android somewhere down the road. YouTube has already rolled out the dark mode for the desktop website last year which can be enabled by clicking the profile icon in the right corner on the YouTube website. Once YouTube starts the wide roll out of the Dark Mode for its app we will update you on the same. Source | Via
Skygofree Android Trojan can track location of the device, turn on audio recording and more
Trojans and Malware are not new to Android; they keep attacking the operating system taking advantage of the loophole. However, the Skygofree Android Trojan is very peculiar and something unique. Discovered by Kaspersky, Skygofree can track the location of the device, turn on audio recording, control WiFi networks and can also manage apps like Facebook Messenger, Skype, Viber, and WhatsApp. It can manually turn on the audio recording that attackers can start listening in on victims depending on the location of the user's phone. It can control WiFi networks and connect the affected phone or tablet to the Wi-Fi network controlled by the attackers even when the user has disabled all WiFi connections. This means that the hacker or attacker will have complete knowledge of the logins, passwords, card numbers, etc. Android Oreo and Nougat can automatically stop inactive processes to save battery power, but the trojan can even bypass this by periodically sending system notifications. It can add itself automatically to the list of favorite apps that function when the phone is in standby mode. It can also monitor popular apps such as Facebook Messenger, Skype, Viber, and WhatsApp. It reads WhatsApp messages through user accessibility Services hiding the request for permission behind some basic request. Surprisingly the trojan can also turn on the front camera ...
