Google investigating Pixel 2 XL voice recording bug affecting WhatsApp, Telegram messaging apps

The never-ending series of problems for the Pixel 2 returns and this time it is a voice recording bug that is affecting messaging apps. According to many users on the Pixel community, the Pixel 2 XL is limiting the volume levels when recording voice messages on WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Allo.  The phone apparently has no issues recording voice clips, but once the voice clip is sent, the recipient gets a message with very low volume, even when the phone's volume is at the maximum. The volume remains low even if listened via headphones, speaker. Even after sending the voice clip, the sender himself also seems to be not able to hear the audio clip. Users in the community have come up with ways like uninstalling/re-installing messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Allo, resetting phone to fix the problem, and since nothing worked, the issue is being finally escalated to Google for which the community manager; Orrin issued an official response, saying that Google would look into the issue. The issue is commonly seen on phones running Android 8.0 and 8.1 Oreo and since the issue is persisting to voice clips in messaging apps, it looks like it is widespread. As voice calls didn't result in the ...

Intel to issue security updates to 90% of processors from past 5 years by next week

With Meltdown and Spectre security flaws taking over the internet from the past couple of days, Intel after confirming the memory leak issues, today announced that it has already issued updates for the majority of the processors. It also said that it expects to roll out security updates to 90% of processors released in the past five years by the end of next week.  Furthermore, the company has also mentioned that most operating system vendors, public cloud service providers, device manufacturers and others have confirmed to have already updated their products and services. However, Intel didn't disclose any time frame for security updates to the processors greater than five years old since reports suggest that up to 10 years of Intel chipsets are affected. It is expected that the fix to the security flaw will incur performance drop by 5-30% depending on the chipset age and configuration, but Intel says that performance impact of these updates is highly workload-dependent and the change shouldn't be very significant for an average user. Even if there is any, it will be mitigated over time. Testing and improvement of the software updates should mitigate the impact of some discrete workloads from the software updates. Intel urges computer users worldwide ...

Apple confirms all Macs and iOS devices are affected by Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities

It is a well-known fact that most modern Intel, ARM, and AMD CPUs and phones are affected by the serious Kernel memory leak issues known as the Spectre and Meltdown. Though Microsoft and Google had responded and said that they are taking steps to prevent any malicious attacks, it was Apple who didn't respond. However, the Cupertino company has now acknowledged the flaw and said that all Mac and iOS devices are affected. Though the systems and phone are affected, the company stressed by saying that there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time. Apple has also clarified that it released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown. Since exploiting many of these issues requires a malicious app to be loaded on Mac or iOS device, Apple has advised installing softwares from known sources only. Furthermore, Apple has assured that in the coming days it is planning to release mitigations in Safari to help defend against Spectre which is another form of the security flaw. Despite the concerns that the fixes might slow down the computers, Apple said that its steps against Meltdown haven’t dented performance. However, the fix to Safari browser to tackle Spectre could slow the speed ...
